I worked at FedEx Express too during one summer. I can never remember what my position was called but basically I did any route that was needed and also overflow. There were never enough people to work the belt, so I had to come in early and do that, deliver and pick up all day, then work the belt again. That was a hard, fast paced, back breaking job! I thought that was going to be a great place to work, what a joke. Especially after talking to the UPS drivers I'd see at deliveries and how much money they were making. They weren't happy either but they said their paycheck made up for it and all the did was deliver and pick up.
I used to load and unload trailers at Roadway back when it was still Roadway. Used a fork lift and it was easy money. Now I know Conway will make you work the dock and then send you on a line haul run. That is no fun. I have seen those guys busting their a@# to load their trailers so they could leave on time. I'm used to OTR driving where all I did was sleep, eat and drive. Mostly drop and hook freight or the customer unloaded it, home every weekend. Did that for most of my career and made good money at it too. So you can see where even Reddaway is a bit of a shock for me still. I lived a pretty hard life in the early days with military, construction, sports constantly, partying. I was an adrenaline junky and now I'm just tired and achy all the time. My friends all tell me I started becoming lazy after I quit drinking lol!

@squonk We only have 6 layover runs... one is in Canada and need a special license for that which im in the process of getting. No we dont have that option for long lay or open on our t-cards. I was hoping to be out more to save mone on gas. Since I do a lot of turns is which is why I ot the apartment there, otherwise if I could stay out like you do I wouldnt of bothered. Pretty uch ill take what I can get, have to pay rent now... Also I wish our old timers would take the long turns, we have 3 guys from the 70s ALL on the layovers... We got another guy from the 70s who is on the aux board, guy should be nominated the nicest guy on earth award, hes actually more concerned the aux board guys get runs before he does, and said to me he stays on the aux board just to keep the guys on the bid runs happy. Hes helped me out quite a bit since Ive been there as well and never has a problem with it
well i kinda cheated and brought my own in, bought a bag earlier as a snack... Wish the machine would work so I can make some... Spent another 14 hour day AGAIN yesterday. Get into work, wait hal hour for hook, then trucks in shop, another half hour, go to harrisburg, wait some time and find out im going to the railyard again, bob-tailing it with a dolley. Of course that truck needed shop time, another half hour, then to the rail yard, to find out one trailer isnt at the yard yet. Had to call 135 back and then they said leave the dolley in the area and take the one trailer back, so another YRC guy helped show me where the dolleys go. Finally after searching forever I found the trailer, hooked and drove back... Had a few CB ramblers flipping out on me when I took it easier through the work zone, north of 81 closes down to a tight tight one lane, speed limit is 55 but I did 45, last thing I want to do it speed in a zone and worse kill somebody. I said over the CB its tight, im a fairly new driver and last thing I dont want to kill anyone if they jump over the barrier, then I heard a TON of nasty comments back. Pretty much I told them their boyfriends will be waiting for you, then they said no wonder you guys are going out of business, to which I replied "whats the matter you mad because we wouldnt hire you, and the fact I drive the same miles, sleep in my own bed and make MORE money then you... CB went silent
@skinny from what I heard we are waiting till the thing with ABF is done... So it might take some time for that
@Cool35 Ive been doing a lot of hooking my own sets too. Some terminals are great as they will already have one ready and they say just park the set here and hook... One terminal I went to i brought a van with barn doors, got there and the guy said ok my yard guy is building your set now, just back the van it and then hook when ready, so I opened the barn doors and backed in, by then the yard guy came to me and said ok heres your set, its all ready to go just do your pre-trip. 150(old terminal) and 136 are the best, my old yard guy normally has you in and out, and at 136, normally before Im even in the building they have the truck done. 187 Brooklyn is the worst!!!! Theyve gotten in trouble the other day actually. I went there and had 3 1/2 hours to get home... PLENTY of time and needed it for the traffic at that hour. Get there had my bills in, lady says ok ill have them take care of it go have a seat, hour goes by, still sitting and she says they havent called you yet, so she asks the guy and he says go build your own set, meanwhile the switcher in the yard isnt doing anything, but whatever, thats not the case, the fact he waited a hour to tell me. Them after I hook the set, and ready to go, im a little shorter on hours but would be ok. I give him the info and told him please rush im low on hours, another 30 min goes by and the lady screams at him, he was too busy dispatchin his own guys first. SO I call my terminal and tell them I wont have the hours to get back but they said head back and we will figure it out then... Now Brooklyn is 100 miles away and Im sure you know about the Long island expressway (495) and 95. The two biggest parkung lots. So at one point when I call she says we might have to put you in a hotel, where will you be, I said the 684 rest stop, its a few miles from 84, so she says ok call back later, When I did the asst manager picked up and I said I can make it to the 84 stop which is closer, I have a half hour left but he said no stay at 684, I just sent two guys to come get you, so I pulled in and waited a hour, and the guys came and got me... Guy educated me on the truck I had which ws an awesome one, ill post below
@cenuty I can only imagine how many hours on that thing... You can keep that LOL. I did 2,668 miles this week
**I saw the number of my truck (day I ran out of hours) and was a number I never seen before, I knew it wasnt an old roadway unit, and wasnt a twin screw yellow unit or even the brand new white ones... It was an old Yellow unit which normally they are a little on the weak side and I had about 35,000. I left the yard and even though it was really old, beat up and not super nice, it handled quite well so I was happy about that. Once we got to i84 I startd driving and was like ok I wont judge a book by its cover, this truck seems pretty good mechanical wise. Next thing I know we get to the big hills with the slow lanes and the truck doesnt want to slow down it just keeps pulling on the hills and I got REALLY shocked as normally our trucks are dogs. So I do my trips with it and when I ran out of hours and the guy came to pick it up, as he was doing his PTI I told him this truck may look beat up but it runs sweet, handles sweet and probly the bes pulling truck I ever had, pulling empty now I dont even realize trailers are behind me. He laughs and says come here, shows me a sticker thats says T-3. He said the reasont he truck is like this is because it is used to pull triples, which then made total sense. HE then said look for those, if you get one your in for a treat...
Well I know this was a long post but had a lot on my mind and finally some time to write it all up. Off until wednesday!!!!cool35 Thanks this. -

i hated line-haul at CWF... You ran the same hubs as me, although I usually lucked out and had a really cool supervisor, but just dock, driving, then dock and driving wre me out... I wanted to stay on days.... At YRC now that Im on line-haul I like it better than P/D. Wish I had weekends off but ill take what I can get.
Squonk we do a lot of turns, I did NH, RI, and harrisburg all this week, those are long turns with 400+ miles. Then since we have a lot of terminals close by we do a lot of sub-turn work, which I like better than long turn... still put in almost the same miles just go to more terminals... I wish theyd let me on a layover... However if they send us to Ohio, or Buffalo we are able to stay out quite a bit, m friend tells me he stays out 4 days -
Linehaul at cwf works for me..I dont want to layover, and I go to school during the days so I have to be home.
