I have an Uncle that is thinking about Ecuador as a retirement location...what do you think of this country? I was a bit taken back when he told me this.

Ecuador is good also Panama. Panama City, Panama is wild & party time 24/7, unless the little wifey is with you.
Philippines, Thailand, China good. I bought a condo in Beijing for retirement, but Hainan Island, China would have been better; it's like Hawaii. Philippines even has a Philippine Retirement Authority for helping Americans wanting to retire there. Philippines also has a Social Security Office and several veterans organizations for the ex-military guys. A friend of mine, retired trucker, bought a condo on the beach in Vietnam & has a couple of live-in "housekeepers."

    Here's a good website to research: InternationalLiving.com

Personally I would consider Argentina or Uruguay for retirement.

Recently I read somewhere, a UPS driver and his wife are moving to Ecuador when he retires in a couple of months. Went to St. Maarten one time looking around for a retirement place, and found many Americans retired there. Many French & Dutch living there also; wife said "no way" because many of the French women are nude on the beaches and even leave their hotel room nude, through the lobby, and on to the beach. Personally, I didn't want them to change their culture just for me. Assimilation into another culture is a must!

I used to work for a little company in Sioux Falls. When I was in orientation they pointed out to one side of the driver parking area. " See those 2 motor homes out there? Do not park in the spots immediately on the drivers side of each of them". 2 of the drivers working there lived in them when on home time. Much cheaper than an apt. I don't know if the company charged them any thing to park there. They also had their mail sent to the company too.

I am "homeless", have been living in the company's truck for over 4 yrs now. All my things are in a storage, near the company's terminal where I go once every 2 or 3 months for hometime. My vehicle is also there. My plan for the future is to buy a 5th wheel and make it my home. Getting very tired of moving stuff out of truck, put in the vehicle, stop at storage, get more stuff, check in a extended stay hotel or go to another hotel when I can't find a room available...:biggrin_25510: then moving everything from hotel to storage and back to the truck... The only problem about having a trailer or 5th wheel somewhere is safety... If I will be on the road for 2 or 3 months, will have to find a very safe place to park it. As for physical address, I have been using a friends address for yrs now...

Ya, English is not only my first language, it is my second, third, fourth,...

I worry about going to an Ecuador or Peru of whatever. I know Brasil does not have Spanish as its national language, is Peru the same way?

This is also what scares me about the Orient--no way in hell will I be able to learn Phillippinean or other languages.

To the whole thread: At what dollar amount threshold would you switch from 'homeless' to getting a shack or trailer, or back from shack or trailer to 'homeless'...?

    ----------------------

I believe my threshold would be $50k per annum. Less than this, I am not making enough dough to live in a truck. If it appears that I will not break $40k for my second 12-months, I may leave the industry or just get a local gig--I may settle for a local dump truck job, 9 hour days, unemployment all winter.

Above $50k, especially above $75k (I know this is O/O land at this money), then I feel I will have more 'discretionary' income for hotels and mini-vacations. Even if living in a truck is a necessity due to being 'homeless', it is still living in a truck. I need to be compensated for this--as of now. I could get used to it I suppose, but I have to see it first
