Looks like it would have gone all the way over if the container hadn't fallen off...
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP/WWBT) - Fire crews pulled a woman from inside the cab of a tractor trailer as it dangled off the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel Monday.
Virginia State Police say the tractor-trailer went out of control and struck the bridge Monday morning. The truck caught fire and the cab is hanging over the bridge that connects Suffolk and Newport News.
Newport News and Suffolk fire crews helped pull the woman to safety.
Now, the U. S. Coast Guard tells WAVY.com it is on-scene due to the potential of fuel going into the water.
I-664 remains closed southbound, according to VDOT. Northbound lanes reopened around 1:30 p.m. However, southbound lanes may be closed through evening rush hour.
Drivers should use the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel or the Route 17 James River Bridge, instead.
Crews are now working to make sure hazardous materials don't make their way into the water, while engineers insure the bridge is structurally safe for traffic.

Shows how stupid drivers are. She was charged with careless driving. I drive around DC-VA Beach and I hate the so called professional drivers here. I don't drive big truck anymore but have found most to be nasty and self serving, with dumps 1st, containers 2nd.

She was real lucky since it said the truck also caught fire for a few moments also.

I saw that on the news yesterday - made me pucker a lil'!
I hate driving on bridges - especially the ones over vast bodies of water.

This bridge is the best, I think:

Personally, I like Throg's Neck northbound, on a clear to hazy summer day, although the view from the Verrazano is breathtaking, too.
Craziest view of a bridge from underneath that I have seen is the Walt Whitman Bridge over Del Monte in Gloucester, New Jersey.
I can't forget my first trip over the Skyway, eastbound, either.
There are a few over the Mississippi that are bad because of being so narrow. There are others where you feel like kissing the ground when you actually make it to the other side, but I haven't crossed one of those in awhile.WV_Daddys_Girl Thanks this.
