If you are adhering to HOS rules on paper how is adhering to them in electronic form a loss of freedom?

If you are currently scoffing at HOS rules on paper congratulations you are one of the reasons for your perceived loss of freedom.

Yeah , right . Your large car can catch a truck an hour ahead of you . You'll run out of hours before you catch them .
But here's a math lesson . With a 14 hour day drop and hook drivers can still run over 600 miles and sit and fill their face if they want to . They have a couple of hours flex time on each end of the run .

I see that sentiment all the time... about "loosing your freedom." I don't see it that way. Yup, load planners do have a window into my available hours, and dispatch can see where I'm at (elogs has nothing to do with that) and can query the current status of my truck. The fact is that at my carrier they don't do that unless there is a reason - like driver incompetence.

There just isn't enough network bandwidth available in a satellite-based communications system to do anything like real-time monitoring of an entire fleet... who is moving, who isn't; exactly where you're at +/- 10 meters. I sat with my fleet manager one day, and we worked that deal on one of the trucks... it took over 10 minutes to bring up that kind of data on just one truck, a simple snapshot of the status - and this guy has well over 50 trucks to manage, dispatch and deal with all of the whining that truckers do about the usual stuff. It's just not reasonable to believe that Qualcomm, GPS location and elogs is some kind of big-brother-evil conspiracy scheme aimed at taking your personal freedom away.

Yup, your dispatcher can bring up a page showing current status of his fleet, and yeah, he can certainly do something completely stupid like dawg you over being stationary 10 or 20 minutes after your break is up. That's not an evil of elogs... it's harassment pushed by the corporate culture at the carrier. The way to fix that is a different job.

No one cares and it WILL NEVER BE MANDATORY...It is your choice to run for a dirt ball outfit that has these e-logs...So why are you shoving it down our throats, this is your choice. Not our choice....You e-loggers remind me of those born agains pushing the bible down our throats..
