OOIDA did a study of speed limited trucks with electronic logs. The crash rate was almost 3 times higher then trucks that can run the speed limit and have paper logs. The government and FMCSA don't care to post this study.

I was pulled in for a log inspection a few weeks ago in Ashland OR. On the way down the hill before I got there, there was a truck, major carrier, electronic logs, crashed in the trees going uphill!! I ask the officer about it, he tells me it was a team truck, and the driver fell asleep at the wheel. After that, he tells me 2 days before that another E-Log company truck, fell asleep on the scale!!

Best part, the other officer gives me all kinds of grief for being on loose leaf logs, tells me I should get a E-Log, shows me on there computer how it works. I then tell him, "Why did the 2 trucks your buddy told me about fall asleep and crash with E-Logs, I thought E-Logs prevent that."

He slide my logs back to me and had nothing to say. I guess you can throw "Saftey" out the window, it's about control. The idiot that wrote that piece is just another sheep in the new herd of "Interstate Zombies"

 

I use loose leaf and I've even experimented with running legal to the letter. Turns out when I run the way they want me to, I run tired way more than if I run according to common sense. I do it my way to ensure that I get home safe.

 

lol i never said I cut off cars. In fact, I will always wait until cars pass to merge to the left. However, I see plenty of trucks cutting off cars all the time just because they just CAN'T wait to get ahead of Prime or Werner. And just to let you know, the truck I drive is governed at 70. I just don't go 70 unless the speed limit is 70.

Maybe before you knock what I write, why don't you read it all first? Or did you only graduate elementary school, and never really got past the "story problems" chapter?

Another one is construction zones. If the speed limit goes to 55, even if there are no construction barrels, the speed limit is 55. Effingham, Mt. Vernon, the town at mm54 where it even goes to 45mph, there was an accident there a month ago between two trucks and a minivan where the lanes shift. I doubt any of them were going the speed limit.

All you big, bad drivers who think you are the king of the road just because you have 10-15-20 years or more of experience behind you think it's okay for you to go over the speed limit, it is YOU guys who have given the industry a bad name. All you who like to get into the left lane all of the time and clog things up for the cars. And when I said I'd cut off a truck, well I don't mean if he is RIGHT there about to overtake me, but if he's coming up on me MORE than a truck length or two. I'd never cut off a car. I don't care about them, they can't kill a bunch of people like a big truck can.

I have 4.5 years of xp, no accidents, no tickets, no anything. Everything that guy said in that news article is spot on, except for it's not just owner operators. It's the entire culture we have of "it's ok to go over the speed limit if we don't get caught". I can't wait until they put speed cameras up over every single highway in every major metro area, and mail a ticket to anyone going more than 5 over.
Maybe these cities will actually have money to fund their poverty programs or what-not. So many people speeding, heck, it's a gold mine.
I wish there were a citizens citation program where I could give written citations to people speeding. I'd even work on straight up commission, and still be rolling in dough!! 50 mph through downtown Indianapolis, don't mind if I do. I'M NOT GONNA GET THERE ANY QUICKER BY GOING 65 THROUGH THERE! And neither will anyone else. Slowing down 22% of your speed limit for 15-20 is gonna cost you like 1% of your time.

 

i have done the exact same thing, and its mindboggling that there are drivers who believe this is better

but it makes the day and the trip long and tiresome to me

drive 4-6 hrs, take a 2-3hr break, driver another 4-6, shut down for 8, sleep for 6, repeat

 

Why do most of the trucks I see in the ditch have E-Logs, and are governed? Experience is everything in this industry! If you think you have it all figured out in 4 years, your part of the problem. If you think the government has your best interest in mind, then follow the rest of the sheep, it's your right.

 

When you are operating your truck at any given time it is your responsibility to take care of yourself and everyone else around you, the best way that you can. If you feel safe operating at the posted speed limit that's your choice and that's fine. The problem is when you try to project your will upon others, you can't do that because the only thing that every single person has in common is free will. When you directly attempt to cause another harm because they choose to go 5-6 miles over the speed limit you are putting everyone in a mile radius around you in danger, and for what? Because they are not doing what you feel is proper?

I was really suprised and shocked by your response on this subject, after reading some of your other post I never had you as an irresponsible person. Please don't attempt to insult my intelligence, or education level, I read your opinion both times and I clearly understand your point of view, I just find it shocking and confusing.

The drivers that have been out here for years do not have a "cowboy" type mentality....we have experience and know what it takes to get the job done safely and properly. Unless you know the safety record of each and every individual driver you cannot tell them what is is the proper way to do their job, some may have an aptitude for driving, and control that you don't possess.

The speed limit is there fora reason ... Sometimes conditions warrant that you maintain a slower speed and sometimes you can go faster, why do you think there is an allowable tolerance?

Lets worry about being as safe as we possibly can and let others do the same

 

The reading was hard 'cause you used a lot of really big words. Fortunately I was able to wave my college degree over it and understand a little.

In fact, you did brag about brake checking another truck (to apparently punish them for speeding and/or tailgating) and how they almost went in the weeds. And about your willingness and enthusiasm to keep doing that. Maybe the mini van and two truck crash was another Barney Fife brake checking one or all of them evil lawbreakers and he took off or didn't ever see it happen?

What difference does it make if you're any driver desperately trying to gain some minutes by driving aggressively or you're out there doing the vigilante thing by.. um.. driving aggressively?

Minding my own business calms me down about other people's driving habits. Perhaps you could try that some time?
