Governed Truck Passing Etiquette

That's well and good if you aren't on a tight clock knowing that if your freight is late to the terminal you are holding up 6 other drivers who are waiting for your freight before they can hook their trailers and get moving to the next terminal............... Granted not all things are as time sensitive as LTL, but you get the idea.

Fast dispatchers and slow trucks are no excuse for the stupidity out here today . If you start late you will finish late plain and simple a 62 mile an hour truck will never do 700 miles in 10 hours no matter how many faster trucks and cars you cut off or how fast you drive in town or school zones or construction zones.

Being mad and rude will not get you there any faster letting someone in front of you will not ruin your day and setting your cruise 3 mile an hour under the governor will not make a difference at the end of your day in terms of miles covered but it can sure make your day allot more enjoyable .

I find myself having to remind me of these things some days because I don't car who you are you can only take so much stupid before it become personal LOL !!!

 

Some of us that are hammering down are not trying to get to the truck stop quicker... the fact is, that I can run 100+ more miles per day than the governed trucks, and I do, too. I have a customer that once a week requires me to run 700 miles in my 11 hours, which includes mountains a-plenty since it's a Montana drop. If there is poor weather in Yellowstone, I might have to take I-15 up and over, adding another 45 miles, putting me close to 750. It's barely do-able, and I make it with literally 6-10 minutes left. On the bright side, I've gotten really good at holding my bodily functions when necessary for 11 hours straight.

 

This is always a controversial topic, at the end of the day it's just a truck no matter how fast or slow or how much fuel they burn, we all have different ways of driving and we don't always agree but face it your still going to get passed so just have common courtesy and move over if someone wants to pass you.

You know, it's not even a question about whether it's morally right or wrong to go faster/slower. It's the fact that it's the law. Speed limit is 65, you cannot make any valid justification why it's ok to go faster than that. Even slower - as far as I know, in most states, if you're going more than 15mph below the speed limit, it's considered impeding traffic.

And sure, most cops won't pull you over for going 5mph or less over the posted limit, but that doesn't make it ok. And sure, going faster doesn't automatically mean you'll get into an accident, but if you did, you'd automatically be at fault, if you're in a CMV. Unless the other driver was drunk, in which case, you might be off the hook. Alcohol seems to trump speeding, which I guess it should. Drinking and driving is terrible. But speeding is not much better. Especially in a big truck. And if you're speeding, then yes, you are affecting my safety and everyone else's around you.

 

So... many highways now have posted speeds of 70 or more. But not too many years ago they were all posted at 55. So I was a danger at 60 in a 55, but completely safe at 75 in a 75 on the exact same highway? Your argument has some validity in places where the speed limit is set according to scientific standards, but all too often that is not the case. Blanket statements such as you present also fail to account for differences in driving ability, which is a larger factor than you think. I'll take 10 over with an attentive driver over 5 under an average driver any day of the week!

 

My truck will run fast enough to put me in jail but most days I run 63 and my view is the opposite, if someone is taking too long to pass i kick the cruise off b/c i dont like someone of unknown capabilities next to me for too long, even if traffic is not backing up behind us.

My complaint is the lease purchase ops chasing 9 mpg doing 55 in a 65 backing up 1/4 mile of traffic or more that just promotes undafe passing by mostly 4 wheelers. I wonder if they would feel bsd over someone dieing in a head on trying to get around them?

Oh...the big one...whats the deal with speeding up when someone is passing you???? If I had a dollar for every vehicle i caught at 63 but couldnt pass after i got next to them i could retire.
Fortunatly i can gas on it usually to about 75 or so then get back in the right lane then go back to 63, and theyre not all cars. There have been quite a few trucks i get halfway past at 63 but it takes 75 or 80 to pass them and just as soon as i pass them they go back to their previous speed.

 

Yep. I get this a lot. It's like they're getting some ego damage or something when another truck passes them. If I'm driving my Aero truck it happens a lot more, too... the hoods, especially the bull racks HATE it when an aero truck passes them for some silly reason. Pretty dumb.
