When you brake down half way hauling a load and everyone wants what you got paid just to finish the load....

Had a broker call me about a load a drivers truck broke down and couldn't finish the load wanted to know if I would be Interested in picking up the load off his trailer and delivering it I said well yes I'm interested in anything that pays Money
he said I'll give you the driver's phone number and you can call that driver and work it out with him. so I called the driver and the driver stated that the load must go another 600 miles and was wanting to know if I would move it for $700 I Laughed and told the guy there was no way.
He told me that he had already hauled the load more than halfway and that he was offering half the money that he was getting for the load and could not pay any more money that he had spent the rest of the money off the load Justin fuel and could not pay any more money. Sounded like he didn't even have the money to fix the truck...

really there are people moving loads 1,200 miles for $1,400?????

Yep, I called on a load in Los Angeles for a load to Denver and they quoted me $1.10 a mile. Said they book these loads every day. I said "not with me".

We (drivers) are our own worst enemies.

I even had one load I called on, a full 53' and 40k pounds, where they quoted me $0.97 a mile. I laughed and he said, "what do you need"? I said "I need to call on another load"

Oh yea I know the feeling.
Called on a ld. from Ms. to Ks. shows lding next Tues.Asked if it could ld. Monday. Well not sure as they are still workiing on it.
Told them I see your rate, but I will need more money than that to move it.
I give him a fair figure. He states that's more than he has in it.
I was polite and said how can you move a stretch ld. for flatbed rates?
He got real quiet. It figured out to 2.38 a mile after the company took their cut and permits.
    Come on guys...

I've seen worse. 48ft 48k lumber must be tarped. rapid city, SD Sioux city IA $300 on 429 miles. Just laughed and said I'd lose less money dead heading. Cheap stuff is all around no matter what the market dry van reefer flatbed heavy haul doesn't matter what you're hooked to there's always cheap freight. I can run a reefer down to Houston on 861 miles for $2100, coming back to Omaha its $1100 on 2 stops but running mile average is 1.77. Could be better could be worse. Is it going to change nope. Let me give you a prime example

I call on a load new lane new customer for the broker I get 6mpg ask for the rate 1900 I say nope gotta have 2100 broker accepts I get the load.

2 days later same load pops up once again broker lists at 1900 guy with an 8mpg truck doesn't negotiate and takes the load. He has just cut the rate. This crap will never change until it is a totally level playing field. Until everybody runs a paid off truck and has the exact same business situation including the mega carriers you will not stop this.

Back to the original post $1400 is cheap yes, maybe that was the best thing the driver could find I don't know don't know where it was picking up and delivering, maybe the driver was hauling that load to get him into a better lane and maybe it woudlve profited him a little bit to set him up for a better load where he could've made a lot more once again I don't know. I see a lot of say no to cheap freight and see a lot of hard core I'll deadhead before hauling cheap but every driver definition of cheap is different. I know what it costs to run my truck, that is the main thing I would rather haul a load that is going to put .20/mile in my pocket, and get setup for a 2.30/mile run that's going 1000 miles than deadhead 200 or 300 miles to pickup a 2.00/mile load that is going into a lane I do not know the average rate on. This goes back to running things as a business, and being educated. We don't know the full situation here from what was explained and don't know what the original driver had lined up. Wed all be kicking ourselves if he had a 4.50/mile run lined up afterwards that was one piece and 500lbs and said he hauled cheap. Something to think about I guess.

Heck yeah I have run cheap freight. Needed to get from Denver to Los Angeles for my son's college graduation. Only load that worked paid 1.10 a mile. Paid the fuel, fixed expenses and we did not have to buy 2 plane tickets.

guy was offering a load monday from FL to MN. 19 pallets of frozen chicken. Like 39,000 load.

It was a "partial" and they only wanted to pay $1400. It was 1700 miles.

brokers ALWAYS say that. It could be the first load they've ever booked, and they use that line. They use it to justify cheap freight. Along with "it's a LTL" and "it's a back haul"
