That's what the angel/devil on the one shoulder says, but the angel/devil on the other shoulder says I should be proactive now when I'm 29 rather than scrambling when the bottom drops out when I'm 35.

OTR isn't a prerequisite for getting a local job. If you want a local job I suggest you look for a local job.

Tell your GF to get her CDL also and go team drive. You can easily bank a grand a week between the two of you and if you don't have a house payment or rent, just live on the truck a few years and bank some coin.

Ed Maclane hit it right on the head. Just because you want to drive a large truck, does not mean you have to go OTR. The fact that you can handle the pace of working where you are now, will say a lot to companies you are looking to hire on with. Just get a local job. It might take some time to find a local company that is hiring, but you are working now, and can afford to wait till a good offer comes along.

The gig you have now is not a good deal, with no insurance, and as you said, the bottom could drop out with very little warning. Better to take your time finding a job now, than to be in a panic to find a job later.

have you tried getting on with Fed ex themselves and not a contractor? I have talked to some fed ex drivers who make some really good money especially the OTR drivers, maybe showing some experience driving for fed ex they might work with you on a cdl and getting a local gig with them. The drivers I talked to said fed ex requires 250k miles experience these days to be hired but maybe in your case you can get in quicker. I wouldnt mind driving for them but I only have about 30k miles under my belt so far so i dont have a lot of company options yet and stuck with this one for probably a few more months.

I would stay where you are at. You are going to make near that driving over the road! Put aside a little emergency stash of cash and if your boss hightails it then use that cash to go to trucking school.

Here's another option.... you get me your job as a Fedex driver and I'll teach you everything you need to know and get you your license for free!

The grass always appears greener but I can assure you that you have a very good job right now and I would highly urge you not to give it up to go live in a truck for half of what you are making now and never see your girlfriend.

The only way I would suggest you leave your current position is if you could talk your girlfriend into getting her license and doing it together. Only then would it be worth it. You guys could make very, very good money as a team!

"Pm" me if you have any questions or concerns.

I does not hurt to call them did you read the requirements ? they can only say No What is it with you guys these days you under value your self and cut your self short. Call these people you never know if they need you bad enough they might send you with a company driver to learn the ropes I got a job pulling a milk tanker and all I had was the endorsement on my license and that was a union job and i just quit a job with CRE that only lasted 3 weeks so go get the freekin job dude if I owned a bunch of trucks and trailers i would rather train someone for a couple of weeks than to make payments on equipment just setting in my yard waiting on that handsome devil with one year over the road woooo pdy Doooda knid of driver...if you were good enough to work for fedex & these guys don't see that. then you don't need them either move on to the next one. and for your info when you fill out an app. with a company and they say SORRY we can't hire you. Some time they will call you back and ask if you still interested in working for them and by the way some of the best local jobs are listed with the EDD"Employment & Development Div." check with your local unemployment office for CDL Drivers. They do take time because of all the lazy pencil pushers that work Gov Jobs. But they are worth the wait Good Luck:biggrin_2552:
