hey there Im looking into celadon I have 4 yrs exp. i live in Springfield Ma. looking to go otr whats the average miles per run and what is the type of frieght last question are you mostly TL or LTL.

emaUOTE=Atlas117;3387231]Over the road, they ask you to stay out for two weeks minimum between time off requests - three weeks if you want to make any money. You could run anywhere in the lower 48 + Canada; they'll have you apply for a passport if you don't have one (at company expense). Most Canadian runs will take you south of Toronto. Once in a while we'll have runs close to Montreal, Winnipeg, etc. but they're somewhat rare. Shouldn't be too hard to get you home to that part of Virginia. Any questions, let me know. I dispatch for Celadon.[/QUOTE]

Full truckload; rarely you'll get multiple stops with additional pay for each stop. Not sure about the standard pay... it is low if you don't have any experience, 33 cpm or something close to that, I think. With 4 years OTR I don't know where you would start. Average length of haul is 400 miles for the OTR planning division. That's a really low number... lower than usual, but that's the number right now. They're working on improving that number too... before long, the system that matches trucks with loads will look at your last few loads and assign you better freight if you've recently taken short loads.

Not sure what the actual numbers are for weekly miles, and I don't want to mislead you. The goal is at least 2500, preferably more like 2800. It really depends on the driver, whether lease or company, how often they are trying to get home, do they have a passport for Canadian loads, do they have hazmat endorsement? A lot of variables, but I don't have the overall OTR averages. Your DM may try to take into account where you want to go, but has limited ability to get you to certain places without routing. And it is forced dispatch for company drivers. If you lease, of course, it's up to you where you go, though turning down loads seriously limits your ability to make any money. For example, if there are two loads that your DM could plan, and one of them is going where you want to go, and your DM knows, then of course they'll give you the one you want - but that's a really rare thing. Most of the time whatever the computer recommends is the load you get, since moving freight is the top priority.

Tough question - I don't want to put down the lease program because it can work out really well for you. But I would think carefully about it first... for instance, how much experience do you have? Are there places you refuse to go? Getting to the house 3 times every month is possible, I guess, but it's really difficult on our end and I can almost guarantee you won't make money doing it. You may end up burning a lot of your own fuel getting there. And then there's the whole question of repairs - if you have some knowledge of maintenance/repairs then you'll be better off, but if not you basically have to trust that the dealer shops know what they're doing, and that's a scary place to be when you're relying on that truck to support yourself and your family. Again, not saying don't do it, but a lot of these really young guys that come into the lease program with no experience quit after a few months because they get drawn into "be your own boss, own your own truck, make tons of money" mentality, and the reality doesn't match their expectations.

I think they still have you apply for your passport in orientation... not positive about that one, but bring your birth certificate.

Minimum is two weeks out (three or possibly four if you live out west) - if you want to make money you'll want to stay out three weeks over the road. If you want to be home more often you can look at one of the regional fleets, depending on where you live. Canadian regional gets an extra .07 per mile on Canadian runs and you can get home weekly if you live in the region. There's northeast regional - not sure what they pay but you can also get home more often. Not sure whether any of those fleets have any openings currently. Let someone in orientation know that you live in the northeast and are looking to get home more often and see what kind of options they can give you.

I don't know the northeast freight lanes very well so I'd rather not comment on that.

There's a lot of drop/hook as well as some live unloads. Lots of different types of freight - Walmart, P&G, Owens Corning, Lowe's, Home Depot, Family Dollar, GM, Chrysler, Toyota, Bridgestone/Firestone, Imperial Tobacco, Kohler, Ikea, etc. etc....
