Expired License

    Weird question here...

    I've been in the military for almost 14 years now, and have recently found out that at my 15 year mark, my career will be done and over with. Don't really want to get into it, let's just say that life sucks for me right now.

    My question is, being in the military and from Texas, I'm allowed to drive on an expired license, given that I have my military ID on me at all times, which I have been doing since 2005. Would this make it more difficult to get into a school, since I really have no record of having a license for the last 8 years?

    Several posters on this forum have lived overseas for years and have no driving record and license expired & didn't have a problem. Yours is a little different, but still you were driving legally under Texas law. Get your drivers license updated & start working on your CDL.

    I plan on doing just that next time I visit my parents. Need to find my old birth certificate, too....

    Consider getting tanker/hazmat endorsements, TWIC & a passport. Tanker pays the most annually, TWIC allows entry to chemical plants & seaports, and passport for runs to Canada.

    Also, get your educational diplomas and certificates in order and ready: high school diploma, college or trade school diplomas, and other certifications for various jobs that you may have done in the past. If you have any security clearances, get those ready and prepared to present them if you apply for jobs with companies that require them.

    Great advice, folks. I'll take it all into consideration when I finally take that step. I may not even get into trucking. As an aircraft mechanic, I might try to find something along those lines. I'm just tired of giving so much and getting so little, y'know? I'm sure I'll find the same on the civilian side of things, but at least there I can quit when I get fed up.

    Might try Petroleum Helicopters for aircraft work. They service the oil rigs.

    If you are tired of giving so much and getting so little then try to stay away from OTR freight if you do go with trucking. Food service, Tanker, Tanker/ Hazmat, Auto Transport, Local P& D, Inter terminal shuttles, or any hourly job will usually pay you for your time. OTR freight which is where most entry level end up is a tough life with a lot of time spent waiting with no compensation for it.

    I'm not completely sure, but I think a military ID will get you into the shipping ports without issue, so I don't think getting a TWIC card is necessary in your case, as your mil ID will serve the same purpose. Maybe someone else can confirm my thinking?

    His military ID will expire when he gets out. Even if it's a retired ID it's different in some cases. He'll be just like the rest of us when he gets out except he might have so many days to update or renew a license.
