The first two weeks of this BS 30-minute break requirement, I had to alter my plans no fewer then three times. Without going into scads of tedious details, let's just say that all three times required a significant alteration of my planned running and stopping points. Once, I had to take one long break before driving the four final hours to the receiver instead of being able to take two ten-hour breaks and spend the night at the receiver and be fresh that morning. Yes, it would have been tight, but the required milk-and-cookie break obliterated any chance of making it at all.
Yes, the 30-minute rule is a PITA. It is infantile, absurd, and silly. It is based on an assumption that drivers just work work work straight through once they start their day, failing to take into account the ebb and flow of our daily activities.
I love my country. I absolutely loathe my government and their pitiful arrogance. -
Just for the record I also oppose the required 30 minute break. There have been many times when I made it to a terminal with 15 minutes or less on my 14.
See the break for what it is and who is truly responsible. When Teamsters lost their case in court to have the driving hours to 10 and eliminate the 34 hour restart they donated over $2 million to key Democrats in 2008. Rep. Frank Lautenberg (D. NJ ) wasted no time making a "review of HOS" a condition of Anne Ferro's appointment. She only made changes she was pressured to change. -

The 30 minute break requirement could actually be more dangerous than not having it at all. Some drivers are out there pushing themselves to keep going when they normally in the past would have stopped for a few minutes a couple of time, now doing that penalizes their work time. So they work and drive and push themselves to the magic time where there is only one 30 minute break required.
It's not too bad right now, guys parking willie nillie in the truck stops and rest areas loitering around waiting for that 29 to turn into 30 so they can go. But just wait til ice and snow time, mark my words!FatDaddy Thanks this. -

Interesting discussion.
For me, I am off duty for anything except driving, fueling, and a pre-trip. If I enter the terminal and decide to wash my truck on my break, that's my choice. I don't see it as falsifying anything, since I am choosing to spend my break making my truck look nice. In my opinion, if I am not being compensated for something, I am under no obligation to regard it as on duty aside from fueling and a pre-trip, both of which are spelled out in the FMCSA regulations.Dinomite Thanks this.
