Hey everyone! Just wondering for future reference, what do the diesel mechanics/techs make in the oilfields? I'm going to be going to school for Diesel Technician and when i get some experience i would like to go do work in the oilfields. I would like to work for CAT during and after my schooling to get experience. So another question would be, would I be better off staying a Tech for CAT or go to the oil fields? I realize the pay is different depending on where you are, but if any one of you could get a hourly rate range and a range of hours as to what I could make in the oil fields would be greatly appreciated!

I see you are 18 and I must commend you on planning and thinking ahead.
I just seems that you are focusing on what you can potentially earn.
Nothing wrong with that as you then know the possibility's and can make long term plans.
There is however plenty wrong with that if that's the reasoning for following a career direction.
If you enjoy or at least remotely enjoy swinging a wrench then I suggest you first find out where you are likely to learn the most and choose that place to start.
If the oilfield is your goal then acquire skills required in the oil field.
Spend a few years concentrating on acquiring skills even if you earn less doing this.
When you have skills that are in demand the pay back will come as a result.

    Arky and wanna_be_trucker Thank this.

Thank you for the great advice. I do understand what you are saying.
I think working for CAT would probably be "easy money" compared to the oil field, and thats one reason why I would like to get into the oil fields, it takes more skill and strength, and of course, most likely earn more.
Which would be good because my plan is to save and invest money, and over time open my own Truck Shop and own a couple wreckers.
BUT, we all know how expensive all that is and how difficult that is because with all the big companies, its hard for smaller independent shops to survive.
So i figured if i work up to the oil fields quickly, and obtain the skills, the money would be well worth it, and maybe add up a lil more quicker.
And even if i dont get to open my own shop, at least I will have made a good living.
