I'm on round 3 of the cooler battle for hubby! The Prostar electric just "cooled" but left the milk warm, the Colemen electric worked, but burnt out three plugs in two weeks (yeah I know its the truck and he slip seats, so no chance of a newbie getting that fixed) so I'm wondering if anyone just does the old fashioned fill a cooler with ice and avoid the whole expensive constantly troubling electric cooler? I was looking at the Coleman Xtreme cooler which promises to keep ice for five days: http://www.walmart.com/ip/Coleman-Xtreme-50-Quart-Wheeled-Cooler/14574676 Does it really work and keep things cool? Does the ice really last, or are you constantly buying ice? Hubby does 7/7 driving, and the ice maker in the fridge at home works. so I can just keep bagging up ice for the week ahead. I'm wondering if we are better off and safer to just keep his milk and sandwich meat iced given he is a newbie and driving an older truck. I would just like something where he doesn't end up dumping his food in the middle of the week due to a "surprise" from the cooler. All advice appreciated!

I have a Coleman marine extreme cooler. It is supposed to be five day but it doesn't quite last that long. I get dry ice and put that in the bottom and then cover it with wet ice. That way it lasts for five days. You don't get any melting at all until all the dry ice evaporates. It is expensive but it works without fail and doesn't drain my batteries. I only do Monday through Friday so five days gets it done for me.

My truck had a apu and that let me run a 1000w power inverter full time. I had a small refrigerator turned down to keep stuff frozen. The inverter could also run a small micro at the same time. I didnt have any problems. Just need to defrost every couple months or so.

I would not put dry ice in the cab, as it evaporates the CO2 could suffocate you while you are sleeping.

I sell dry ice for a living and itd be so small of sublimation and it being on the bottom with newspapers over it, you would not notice it. Sleepers arent air tight.

The math has been done many times. An electric cooler is far cheaper. You just need to buy quality, then it will last.

If he is a flat bed driver he could buy a small fridge and move it from truck to truck. Or sell it to the other driver and get a new one. Always make a profit! I ran reefer kept my food in the trailer. Perk of the job. :)

I've been using the Coleman for over a year, and the plug has never melted. The trick is to ensure that it stays plugged in to the outlet tightly and completely.

Theres something going wrong with that trucks electrical system if he's melting plugs. I ran one for over a year and never had any issues.

I ran reefer too and NO I couldnt do that very often. Trailer would have a shippers seal that couldnt be broken. And we didnt always run reefer loads or some were -10. Not that I didnt think of it.
