I have a felony from 2008. 2 counts possession of a weapon and one count "destructive device". I applied for swift, and im in the process of talking with the recruiter now. I got off the phone yesterday with their investigations department after they ran my background check and the guy pretty much told me as long as its not a violent crime or dui/dwi you are most of the time hired.

Look into swift. nice easy company. many benefits and decent starting pay

The general advice I seem to see over and over again is just apply apply apply. I think that's about all you can do. Apply everywhere until someone takes a chance on you. I don't think you can do much else.

I think that it more the insurance companies and attorneys. Although, should a driver become involved in a serious accident, you can bet that the lawyers and cops will dig into the background of the driver and if they find something it could cost the carrier and their insurance company dearly. Another factor is with shippers and liability. Most carriers have experienced theft from drivers. Someone with a previous criminal history is usually more suspect than someone with a clean record. Of course, it also depends on the crime. Most criminals tend to be repeat offenders. That is one reason why those who do accept felonies want to see 5-10 years of history that is crime free before offering an opportunity.

Not all carriers go to Canada. Many of those who do go to Canada don't force drivers to cross the border. I have known drivers with clean records who simply don't want to cross the border. It has gotten to be something of a hassle. You can get used to dealing with the border patrol people.

What do they consider 5-10 years. 5 years from the date of arrest or 5 years from end of sentence/parole
