I don't understand why the Imperial gallon is discussed or used for reference if there are no pumps that dispense in Imperial gallons. Makes no sense to me.

Here's the long and short of it. (from an old fart). I grew up with the SAE/Imperial system, know all about feet, inches, yards, miles, temps in Farenheit, etc. My wrenches are sized @ 5/8", 9/16", etc. The only difference as a kid was it took 5 US quarts to make a Canadian gallon. Simple. Then Pierre Elliott TrueDOUGH$$$$ decided it would be a good idea to adopt the metric system. Okay, makes sense as everything is divisable by ten, except that the US is our closest neighbour and our largest trading partner. So now we have a whole new system to learn. Liters per 100 kilometers makes no sense to me whatsoever, and I don't think they even teach the Imperial system in school anymore.
So now you have a kid wanting to learn how to drive a truck. So he heads off to driving school, aces the tests and hires on with Challenger, Crash-X, whoever, and his 1st load with a 13'6" van is just off the Loop in Chicago, but he's never been exposed to the SAE system and the only foot he knows is the one standing on the thottle pedal.
Good luck. Or, for the peeps in the Province of/de Quebec, Bonne chance.Speedloader, TexasTailTwister, Prairie Boy and 1 other person Thank this. -
I will agree here. Only thing imperial gallons are usefull for is trivia night questions. No one measures by this anymore.
I am 38 and have used metric my whole life. I know a mile because the grid roads are setup and surveyed in 1 and 2 mile increments. Everything else to me is just converted us standards. I think and know metric better. Mpg is something I know better as a standard in muscle car mileage but to know fuel economy I need to convert it to l/100k.and almost everyone my age or younger in Canada is the same.
For trucks up here your app would need to measure l/100k and fuel purchases in litres. And also convert miles to k. Also if it is a logbook app it needs to differentiate between us and Cdn hos. Because neither one is complimentary anymore. Ie you cannot run us in Canada and be compliant and vice versa.TexasTailTwister Thanks this. -
I am pleased, and proud, to say that I am multi-lingual in terms of measurement of either volume, distance, etc. I can use metric, US, or Imperial. I can also use the "Texas" or "Alaska" methods (measuring by the 'shoot' load). AND I am also happy to say that, for the more part, all these measurement voices are in my head, because this ol' dude doesn't have a conversion app on his rotary dial phone !!
Prairie Boy, JayTee and TexasTailTwister Thank this. -
appreciate the input. I had finished up doing exactly that a day or so ago. I thought I was nearing the completion stages several days ago, but every time I turn around I see another feature that should be or could be added. I'm not doing any logging functions. there are plenty of those around. Thanks again.

I do mine in km/L .... simply because my truck measures in km. and gallons to litres is x 3.785. Easy enough. To go from that to US MPG take your km/L x 2.35. I have never used and see no use for imperial gallons (4.5L?) in the trucking world.
Speedloader Thanks this. -
I do L/100K. Truck odometer in Kms, diesel pumps in Litres why do I want an MPG?
WELL, when somebody older than me comes over to shoot the breeze and tells me he can get 6mpg US ex YKE to Edm with a Rocky in his Volvo, I'm going to convert that sucker to see what it means in metric so I can argue (with love) that the maintenance on that thing he's driving is more than the fuel savings are worth.
ALSO, metric is what I can process the fastest. I can't understand the mix of metric and imperial in company contracts unless they're doing this to confuse all the kids, so I convert that right away. I really liked reading how everyone does theirs! Pretty neat.
