One of our trucks got stopped in CA the other day and they said that the truck and trailer combination was too long to run legally in the state. The trailer is a 53' SD being pulled by a KW W900l with a 319" wheelbase. Can you buy an annual over-length permit in CA like you can for Florida? I looked on the website but it did not have much info. Thanks!

Was he on an STAA route, or a state highway when he was cited?

If you look at this document and read table 2A, it would appear that CA cannot enforce the 65' limit on STAA (NN) routes or reasonable access routes to same. State and local highways are a different matter entirely.

I'm not an expert, but it seems that states cannot impose a length limit on Interstate highways beyond what was in force beyond the ISTEA 'freeze' of June 13, 1994. According to Table 2A in my linked document above, CA did not have a length limit at that time.

You need to fight that ticket! Seems the officer had too much coffee and was dazed from all of the caffeine or excessive donut intake ;)

It's also possible that if your carrier is registered for CA intrastate operations that you're now subject to CA regulations? A California attorney that's a mutual friend of Andrew Jackson could probably clear this issue up for you in a hurry. I'd suggest a mutual friend of Benjamin Franklin, but he's got so many phony friends these days that you can never be sure...

I am the carrier, I just have a couple of trucks. So no Intrastate issues. I thought it was strange because I was running CA for years and never had an issue.

Thanks for the link to the map Nexwinner! And your link Windsmith!
