LTL in Pictures

Discussion in 'LTL and Local Delivery Trucking Forum' started by road_runner, Sep 1, 2013.

  1. I wish somebody had a picture of one of the old JiffLox tractors from Yellow or Roadway. My Dad's got an old Volvo daycab that used to be a Big R truck with it. It still had the orange hood and blue fenders before he painted it. It's funny to see a truck going down the road with two fifth wheels!! LOL. HAdn't seen one on the road, though, in a long time.

I seriously doubt the young new breed of drivers will know what a Jifflok is unless they google it. I can remember when all the big LTL's got brand new GMC Brigadier tractors and everyone thought they were stylin.

Well, I will admit to being one of those "youngsters" who had never heard of such a thing. So I did a web search, and came up with this pix. Thanks for making me feel younger!:yes2557:

Can someone please explain why they made a truck with two fifth wheels? You would have to have quite a long gooseneck on the trailer. Would the fifth wheel closest to the cab be raised so that the gooseneck of the trailer would clear the back fifth wheel during turns?

Gleaned from a quick google search:

The dolly is the second axle. The tractor's fifth wheel gets pushed all the way up to the cab, and the dolly's is moved forward onto the tractor's frame. This was a way to take a single axle tractor and make it a tandem.

Look close at picture see the yellow paint. That is the eye on the converter gear ( Dolly) the pintle hook, air lines and light cord all right their. Quite a few of the LTLs used them until they were outlawed in the Master Freight Contract. PIE,IML,ETMF/ABF all had these rigs that many a employee lost limbs and I believe some lost their life's hooking them up.
I watched a ETMF driver use the next door neighbors foundation wall to back against to hook one of these up. It went through the wall.
What a waste in the snow dragging around another dead axle. But they could pull them heavy rails with them.

We still have a heavy haul tractor that has a third axle that attaches just like that. The stars have to align just right to hook or unhook from it.

  10. Hey, I AM one of those young new breed guys. I've been driving since I was 18, but I'm only 38. I still feel new. I grew up around trucking, so I remember these stupid things.
