Hey guys, I was just wondering if someone could help me out with my job search. I've got about 2 years & 7 months experience with dry van and reefers (Haz-mat, tanker & passenger endorsements). I currently live in Winona, MN but I'm looking to move to the Chicago area pretty soon. I'm trying to find a decent company where I can be home on the weekends and where my move to Illinois won't affect anything. I'm thinking most likely Midwest regional or dedicated. I just parted ways with my most recent company after 2 years this past June. That position was also LTL/Midwest Regional. If anyone has any recommendations I'd much appreciate it.
So far the two companies I have in mind are JB Hunt and Marvin Keller...
Anybody got any good companies in mind??

Watch a lot of company's in Chicago area get shut down. Most have very bad scores before u sign onto a small company there look at the CSa score

If you would be interested in being home most nights , have really good pay/benefits/retirement plans/health insurance/vacation/sick/personal time...and you'll be with-in a close commute of Lemont IL. Check out Golden State Food's. They are a fast food dist. and are a really great place to work...... if you don't mind a hands-on job. I worked for them for over 30 years and loved it.

How about regional with Millis Transfer?

I'm rather biased towards Bulkmatic. The main terminal is in Griffith, IN, and the company is very regionalized.
Home every weekend is not an issue. Not 100% sure how the Chicago area differs from the terminal I run out of, but if it's not much then you can expect home every weekend and most days thru the week. -
What you want to also be leary of is a mega OTR that promises a 'regional' fleet to get you home every weekend but isn't telling you that a) it won't actually happen and, b) your paycheck will look like it shrunk in the wash. (In my case, that was Gordon.)
With your two-plus years recent experience, you could probably find something like I found out of Indy--great pay (really great pay), all loads go out from Indy and back to Indy, senior drivers home every night if they want, other runs out a couple days and back.
If you left in June, though, it's October now. Anything over a month or two raises questions. So you need to get on the stick. You want a smaller niche company with great pay and a regional footprint so you'd be happy with whatever they throw at you.
There was a Bulkmatic driver in town (Spencer, IN, pop 2,500). Haven't seen him for a while. Dropped his trailer at the edge of town and bobtailed to the house--in his new-looking daycab. Now, what does that tell you?Last edited: Oct 6, 2013

99% of the drivers I work with live within 25 miles of the terminals and are home every weekend and most nights through the week.
There are a few drivers who like to be gone all week, but that's up to them.
