I have a buddy who's trying to buy a tractor. He's looking for a w-9 or 379. He's got 60,000 to spend. He's looking for either of those two models between the years of 2000-2005. To be honest I didn't think it would take him more then a month or so with that kind of cash. But he's been looking for like 4 months now. And a lot of these dealerships are jacking the prices way up on trucks that are no where near worth the amount they want. Trucks with 800,000 plus miles on them and dealer wants over 70,000$. I could be wrong but the new motors are kind of junky, 150,000$ for a new tractor that breaks down with computer issues is not money well spent for an o/o. Dealers know this and are raping drivers that are trying to buy older model motors b/c of their durability. I know that this doesn't apply to everyone and I'm sure drivers have had luck with brand new trucks so don't jump down my throat for making those remarks. Some of the dealers that I visited with him were very ####y and out n out rude. They also were very uneducated on anything mechanical. Most of them loved to point out any new piece of technology, I guess to distract you from the fact that the truck was beat to hell, needed brakes, tires, paint, and god knows how many gaskets to stop the leaks. I'm just venting a lil here and wanted to know if this attitude is a trend nation wide or did he just run into a few bad ones. Feels like a bad time to be trying to buy a rig from a dealer.
Dealerships getting way to full of themselves?

Anything is worth what someone is willing to pay for it.
I guess if I was him and dealerships are not willing to work with him I would try a private party.dannythetrucker and Cetane+ Thank this. -
try paccar used truck centers. the 2 times i've been to the local deal.er we're the best prices i've run into.
he'll still pay 60G. but the miles are around 400k. and the trucks are 4 and 5 years old.
carb regulations has deflated truckers older then 07. and inflated trucks newer then 07.
last year was a much better year for prices then this year. paccar was selling 08's for 45G with 450k miles. -
luvtotruck, truckon, chalupa and 6 others Thank this.

I've had dealers see the name on my truck, find me on the net and call me wanting me to trade my 2000 379 in, because there's a demand for them and not for the newer emissions trucks, unless you run to Commifornia....

carb regs have inflated prices of 07 and older, deflated 07 because of too much carb ####

Geeze....but typical for the area. Yooze guys, wise guys, chawwcket stuff too.
Tell your bud to leave the are on the web and truck paper. Out of compliance iron is cheap in Cal. and pricing is better in the south and mid west. Ok has some real hot dealers. Couple of buddies have done well there. ( 07 379 / C15 / 10 / 800k) 32k or same in day cab but with 493k went 55k. Be glad to make a call and get you some phone numbers.
I know of a 07 379 / 10 needing a motor reman. (C15) showing 900k. A pretty gal, big walkin..anyway I like it at 15k. Dunno if the owner will bite that low but he might. I'm out at 15k but your bud may want to go a little deeper...... just sayin...
Your bud can let the Jersey boys choke on the arrogance and ignorance. He's paying cash (right? ) He'll have no problem.
Good luck -
Tell him to wait till Jan/Feb (3 months) when trucks are being cited and shut down in California, reality will set in for thousands of truck owners. If he really doesn't ever plan on running CA, there will be a massive amount of trucks available in a few months. Those of us who run CA are still seeing more than half of the trucks on the road are non compliant. Dozens of impound yards are being set up all over the state, CARB has a new office being built at Banning...
We are in that funky limbo right now, deniers are hoping 1). They will never have to go back to CA after CARB is in effect. 2). There will be a "moratorium" on the mandates. 3) they wont enforce it....
When the reality of one or more of those hits, there will be plenty of old trucks available (cheap).chalupa Thanks this. -
Hey GT,
I'm also in the market...and I have a little vulture in me too. IYHO what exactly ( years etc ) will not be compliant.... pre 08's?
I could certainly wait a few months for a fire sale.......
