Independent truckers see end of the road

This is an article that just came out yesterday that all independent self employed Owner Operators should read!
This is what I suspected when I ran our numbers. That if we didn't get such good fuel mileage, have low insurance, and a paid off tuck and trailer, we would be going under right now. How can fuel have doubled since 2002 and yet truckers get paid the same rate? Truck repossessions have doubled since 2006. The US govt. needs to step in a put a cap on diesel prices, regulate the brokers. These brokers that are scamming the drivers are actually putting themselves out of business too. When truckers go out of business so will brokers. Some brokers are taking 60% or more! The driver of course is the one carrying all of the heavy expenses to stay in business. I don't think brokers should be allowed to take more than 15%. The govt. had better step in and do something.
I heard recently that truckers can legally demand to see what the shipper paid the broker. Has anyone else heard about this?
There was a strike last week that we didn't even know about, it must have been on Sirius radio and we have XM.

We pull foodgrade tanker and our loads average $3.20-$3.80 per mile with an occasional $4 a mile load. Problem is when we get to Ca or east coast we usually have to sit or deadhead way too far. Our company has the same old first in first out bs. Yeah right any suggestions?
My real question is for those who have paid off their trucks. Ours will be paid off this year and our accountant says we need to buy another one. Either make payments and have a newer truck or lose the tax write off and donate to to the IRS. Please enlighten me. -
Good grief, don't tell these people how much we get for pulling tankers around, or they will all drop their boxes and come to work and ruin it for us. Let them think we are all starving right alongside of them. You are going to ruin our deal if you let the word out.!

good luck omega getting your point across about the brokers, I tried but it seems that too many want to believe we should let the poor brokers alone and let them scheme and scam all they want, I personally think we should demand that the brokers be made to deal honestly and fairly with all concerned and be held accountable for any illegal and immoral dealings that they are involved in, also the legal loopholes that they use to commit these shady dealings should be slammed shut thru effective legislation and enforcement, however it looks like I am in a small minority that demand honesty and integrity

Yep, looks like you are just all alone out there, wearing a pair of blue tights and a red cape, fighting for truth, justice, and the American way.
