Hi, I currently have a Class B with air brakes and I want to get my A. I have a road test booked but the only truck I have to take the test with is a dump truck (with air brakes) and a 14k GVW trailer that doesn't have air brakes (or any brakes). Is a setup like this allowed for a class A license since the trailer is over 10k GVW? My concern is that since it doesn't have air brakes the cop wont let me test in it, however, I already have the air brake endorsement from the class B so I don't know if I can get by without it on the trailer.
Also wondering if they give you a restriction on your license for using an automatic truck now?'
thanks.
Class A air brakes road test question.

if you have the airbrake on youre b it should go onto youre class a
-
depending where your from you might have restrictions for the automatic AND possible restriction on the A for having a 14 k trailer
-
In NY state, you will be restricted to a class A truck-trailer only. You have to take the test in a semi to be able to drive a fifth wheel trailer. When I bought my new log truck and pup in 98, thats what I took the test with and had that restriction. You need to find out from your state how the test works for you.

I'm in Mass, where can I go to check about the automatic restriction?

Try the states dmv website and do a search. If they have it it "should" be there or you can try calling the main office of the dmv.

I really do not think the trailer matters, the truck does. You shouldn't have any restrictions if you test with that combo because I can not find a word about testing with a trailer that doesn't have air brakes or a fifth wheel.

If that trailer doesn't have any brakes, I wouldn't even let the DOT man see it, I'd be surprised if they don't put the trailer OOS. When I took my road test 16 years ago, I took the test in a dump truck with a pintle-hook equipment trailer (with air brakes).

You're going to have to show the tester your trailer is safe. That means showing him it has brakes. Also, to get a CDL "A", you need to test with a trailer over 10,000GVW. I believe a road test in an Automatic will restrict you to Auto only on your license.

^ the trailer is over 10,000GVW, and it does have electric brakes but I'm 90% sure that they don't work. How would you even go about testing electric brakes, only thing I can think of is jacking up the trailer and trying to spin the wheel but I doubt the cop would make me do that lol? I understand this combination is less than ideal but it's all I have at the moment. My test is next Tuesday and my boss will be pretty pissed if the trailer gets put OOS. Thinking about canceling now but I don't know if I should just try it and hope for the best.
