All I have ever done is operate heavy machinery, and drive a truck. Over a few months time a developed a symptom called cataplexy, something that is associated with narcolepsy (something I have never had until recently). In my case is is pretty severe, and now I lose pretty much all control of my muscles anytime I get any type of emotion, and collapse. Anger, happiness, anything. Needless to say I lost my cdl. Due to the severity of my situation the doctor mentioned disability. That is something I do not want to even debate on getting. Does anyone know of anything that deals with trucking, by working from home? I got some money saved up and thought about getting into brokering, but not sure If I want that kinda stress. Also thought about trying to recruit for other companies, but I am a honest person, and will not lie to a driver. Just kinda seeing if anything is out there. Any ideas? Not sure if there is anything, but thought it never hurts to ask.

Firstly, I'm very sorry to hear of your condition. I really hope it can be controlled through medication, therapy or whatever else in the future. My thoughts are with you.

Now I can't speak for all companies, but mine specifically has a night dispatch position where the person is on call from 11pm-7am from the comfort of their own home. They can book loads from the boards, handle incoming driver and customer requests and act as a go between when there is a situation that requires upper management. I'm not sure every smaller company would have a position like this, definitely not the larger carriers, but it's an example.

Again, I'm really sorry you've had to experience such a life changing situation so abruptly. Stay positive and you'll find you can make the most out of any situation. Cheers.

    Maybe a dispatching job.

Nothing wrong with being a recruiter either.

Sorry 4 your condition. I no how it feels not being able 2 work. If u still want 2 work in the transport industry there are plenty of jobs. Look on craigslist or talk 2 company u are working 4 maybe they have something 4 u. If they don't want 2 help u tell them u want 2 file a work comp case for a accupational disease. Legally u can do this. I found this out when I developed blood clots and I have 2 be on,blood thinners 4 life. Just food 4 thought. Get well and be well. I wish u nothing but good 4 your future. Awe yea if u file a case then your company will have 2 pay u benefits 4 life and your doc appointments 2.

I'm a happy Swift driver and I was fortunate in that the recruiter that called me after I made first contact was a lady named Kim DeDucca. Kim answered my questions, never once lied or skewed the truth and was straight up in every encounter we had. I've talked to numerous drivers who dealt with her and had nothing but high praise. You can be a recruiter that is far and away better than the liars merely trying to make their fat body count commission because you obviously have the integrity not to be a liar but have the passion for what we do. Kim retired last year. It would be great to have more like her. It would also be great to have fewer new drivers talking about the recruiter that lied to them.

Best luck to you driver. Get better and enjoy the new life you are about to start. Remember every time a door closes a window opens.

Disability has a bad name because all the freeloaders that abuse it. It was made for people like you that are sick. So don't feel like you are degraded because you have worked and paid for it. You don't have to stay on it but use it like you would unemployment. If you find another job you can do then great. You might have to retrain for something and you will need assistance. Your health might get worse. I would file if I was you.

I'm in the same situation. I lost my medical card and I'm limited to working at my own pace. I got on disability because the bills have to be paid and my long term disability insurance company made me file. I'm going to school online to get a career in a field I know I can do from home. Hopefully next year I can start my own business from home and be self sufficient again.

Don't let your pride get in your way. It's a tough road ahead and you can use any help you can get. If you can't find a job right away you need to create a game plan. There are all kinds of legit opportunities on the internet.

Thanks for all the info everyone. I will be looking into dispatching or recruiting. May do what CondoCruiser said and find some schooling to get me into a field I can do. Thanks for all the kind words also. I have been trying to see this as a blessing because I am now home with my family.

    What he said.

Disability is like an insurance that you have been paying for. Why wouldn't you use it now that you need it? If any kind of emotion provokes a collapse... I don't know, but it sounds like a really big deal to me. I would look into getting that disability first and foremost and then you can look into developing a plan for a different job without the stress of how are the bills going to be paid.

It's sad that you're having to go through all that, but yes, keep looking at the bright side. And good luck.
