Zenix,You asked how I hit the hawk.I was on a two lane headed towards Tupelo. The road was narrow,no shoulder.Just scrub brush and pine trees along the side of the road.I was driving a cab-over at the time. The hawk decided to take flight from the side of the road as I was driving by.He got up about four feet, not enough to clear the front of my cab.He made a good impact above the passenger side headlight. It left a dent the size of a dinner plate.I guess his mother didn't teach him to look both ways before crossing a road.Another friend of mine had a similar story. He was on a two lane.A turkey vulture came out of the tree line.It came through his windshield, hit him in the head.He got cut up pretty good but managed to stop the truck with out a problem. The troopers that showed up couldn't believe it nor could his boss.He did have the the evidence. One dead turkey on the cabs floor.

I had a pheasant, at least that was it looked like, in South Dakota end it all on my windshield.
Turned right into me, hit head on. Thud, bounce, no more bird. -
I was pulling up a mountain one time and a big hawk flew into my passenger windshield (it did not break). The oil and powder of him left an perfect sihouette of a spread eagle on the glass.
One driver had an big owl come through his passenger windshield and the owl landed in the pass. seat .

Well, despite the fact that Animal Control is usually wrong about everything he touches, I have to agree (as incredibly painful as it may be to do so!) that he may have a point here. At 1:40 in the morning, the odds are higher that the driver fell asleep and lost control vice having to swerve for a small animal. And, since if I recall correctly, that highway has some pretty decent sized sound walls along the freeway which really tend to inhibit small animals (or any other size) getting onto the road. I would be really curious to see what the investigation turns up, because there is more possibility of the truck drifting off the road and the driver suddenly realizes it and then jackknifing than there is of animal avoidance.
As a note, just because I agree with this part of the theory as a possibilty does not mean that I associate myself with the racist and derogatory comments about the driver and his possible origins. Those strictly belong to the person that posted them.
