Hi guys, I'm considering going into truck driving, but I need a little help and advice from you fellow drivers... I drove for UPS for 7 1/2 years but I had to resign due to a family relocation and now I'm in Los Angeles. I don't have a CDL license since it isn't needed to driver for UPS so I need some help on choosing a good starting company to train me and that offers the must home time possible running out of near LA

    thanks

Go with Swift then after your obligation switch to a company that has local or regional options. Here's a couple with Western Regional plus CA terminls:

    trans-system
    Watkins & Shepard

When you leave Swift there will be much more to choose from on the Careerbuilder website.

Thank you guys for your replies... I checked swift and Schneider and Schneider looks like a good fit but no driving school, I wonder if I have to have my CDL before applying with them

Why not reapply at UPS with your CDL --seems like they would have everything you want -good pay and home nightly.
Sorry- i see you are looking to get your CDL but still doesnt UPS send you to -or train their drivers ?

With schnieder yes you have to have your cdl before hand but if you need the school swift offers it or you could go threw a outside school like I did with road master and go with a company that does tuition reimbursement which schneider does I have worked for swift then went schnieder can say swift was ok when I was on a dedicated account but if not pay was very well I get better pay with schnieder as well as a much better truck 2013 instead of 2008 but they where fair I was home weekly with swift as we'll cause I was dedicated brought home about $650 weekly

the problem with UPS is becoming a driver is nearly impossible unless you have seniority specially in big cities like Los Angeles and Miami (where I come from) the wait time here in LA is 10 to 15 years and then to get in feeder driver (rigs) another 15 to 20 years of service

i filled the application with Schneider to see if I get an answer.... If anything there's a school I really like near me. I'm not looking to break the bank thanks god that money isn't a problem so what ever money I make most likely it goes to the saving account, I'm more concern about the home time... I was looking at swift and they are based out Mississippi how would school work? Would I have to travel there for training?

I believe Swift is based out of Phoenix,Az. Most companies handle getting you to them when coming
to them for a company driver position. From experience, talk to the drivers of the company you're looking
at in the area you live in. They are a good source of information on what to expect. For the school question
I would recommend calling Swift direct and ask those questions. Be sure to ask about reimbursement
for school. I've heard Prime has a program to help you get your CDL through them with a commitment to
drive for them for a certain period. I don't know anything about their operating area. Just throwing in
    suggestions as possibilities. Good luck!
