I have an 04 Western Star with a 14L Detroit that is getting overhauled. We have new pistons rods and wrist pins. When you put the piston assembly together, you can put the rod in a vise and grab the piston skirt directly under the wrist pin holes and there is a little bit of up and down slack. Is this normal? This is my first dealing with a Detroit so im not familiar and I cant get any help from technicians locally. Thanks

I would think that slack would turn into a knock if you put it in like that

A little play is normal (about 0.002-0.003"), but I cannot tell if what you have is too much or not, measure to be safe. The piston pin bore should be 55.05 mm (2.1673") - 55.065 mm (2.1679") measure both ends horizontal and vertical. The pin diameter should be 54.992 mm (2.165") - 55.0 mm (2.1653).

    cpayne54 Thanks this.
