The trick to the DMV written tests are simple...find the key word(s) and don't be led astray.

In this case the first key is EXCEPT, the twist comes in the set-up of the answer. In "A", the word "only" is the decider. "ONLY" puts definite parameters on the answer and it's intent. The others...B,C,and D...have possible or potential reasons they would be true as has been described by the other posters.

This is an example of negative questions. You are to find the one Wrong answer among the four. Three of which are correct. So you are looking for the one that is incorrect. Anti freeze is also engine coolant. It is therefore used year round. So A is a wrong statement which makes it the correct answer for a negative question.

Seems to me A is your answer because it is false. Antifreeze is used everywhere ,not just in colder temperatures.
    B, C and D are True

Now that I have a little more time...

    EXCEPT means "Not Including".

So the way it's worded it can be a double negative which is improper English.

You are learning to drive not write a book! Besides all that a truck engine will shut down by itself if it becomes low on coolant and overheats. You ain't doing much but calling road service. :)

You can see by the wide array of answers it is confusing. Perfect practice for the FMCSA regulations. They play them word games throughout. :)

How is this a double negative? In any case to the op just take this as the ultimate advice into this career pay attention to everything. Something as simple as the word except confused you into over thinking.

Well I think my confusion was two-fold. First off, I didn't realize anti-freeze was also a coolant (I'm not very good about knowing things about cars, but I'm learning!), and secondly I was always told to never take the cap off the radiator when it overheats.

I do appreciate all the answers given and I understand, now, the reasoning behind the answer.

    THANKS AGAIN!
