probably an idiot question but im gonna ask it anyway. when you are stopped for refueling, are you considered on duty or off duty for the time it takes to fill it up. i imagine that 200 to 300 gallons may take a while to pump. i guess what im trying to ask is does this cut into driving time? and also what is this im hearing about a 30 minute break after 8 hours. i have never heard of this. what is that for?
stopping for fuel. how does that effect your drive time?

Fueling is "on duty, not driving". If you did a good trip plan and don't have any major delays it doesn't effect your daily driving hours but will count against your 70. Many of us show fueling during pre or post trip time if we can.
The 30 min break requirement went into effect last year. You cannot drive after you've been on duty for 8 hours without 30 minutes off. Two 15 minute breaks don't count. It must be 30 consecutive minutes. -
yea i had heard about the 30 min break but hadnt heard the details. i really dont know what to make of that. is it a good thing or a bad thing?

i drive 2500 mile trips i need 30 minute breaks for these old bones
local guys with 19 stops just adds time to their day -
Opinions vary. Only effect it's had on me is occasionally I have to stop someplace other than my preferred spots.

so that would be perfect time for bathroom break and not mess with the rest of your drive hours also.

Even if I'm taking on 130 gallons or a bit more, I seldom log more than 8 or 9 minutes for fueling on elogs. Most of the time it's 6 or 7. If you're on paper, your company (probably) wants you to log 15 mins. But this varies from company to company.

Fueling is always "on-duty". I'm pretty sure it's illegal to mark it otherwise and if DOT catches you "off-duty" while fueling then you could be in trouble. Or that could just be a load of bunk, who knows. But it's what I was told. Like Keitht1967 said, I try to fuel in the morning when I can while on my pretrip. It saves a lot of time that way. And no, it doesn't eat into your driving time. You'll still have the same amount of time left to drive after you get done fueling as you did before.
On the 30 minute break, I actually like it. It gives me time to pull over and eat lunch or dinner and get a bathroom break. Plus it's nice to get out a stretch your legs once in awhile.
