Advantages of staying under 26000 lbs? Disadvantages?

You need to be enrolled in a drug consortium regardless, thats Federal Law. If your staying inside your state your correct in saying no IRP required. If your crossing State lines for hire over 10,000 gvw you need IRP, or at least a permit from the state, or states you'll be traveling through. That is unless your just traveling in to bordering states and your state has a reciprocity agreement with it's bordering states.

 

You only need to be enrolled if you have a class A license.
Although it could also be read as being under 26k, but that would be up to your auditor I guess

 

Disadvantages? Harder to find loads I can load out a regular flatbeder all day long at good rates, not try doing those rates with 10-15k of cargo space, definitely more of a challenge, but more $$ in your pocket at the end of the day.

 

IRP/IFTA/Apportioned plate are required for 28k and over, under 26k doesn't need to have an apportioned plate.

 

26,001 and over, not 28,000.

 

Need the skill to handle a truck like that. I had to learn that. Pickup don't work like a tractor. They have big pickups now, not the same. Scale ticket, had to add it up. 293,980. 18 axles. Move it 340 miles. I like it.

Do yourself a favor though and check with your State on this, it could be a state law? Fines for not being enrolled when you're required to be are very expensive.

Also check with your state about pulling a trailer with a GVW of 10,001 or more. In my state with a trailer GVW of 10,001 lb or over we are required to have a Class A license which means we need to be enrolled in drug testing.

 

Yep it is a typo, so it is 26k not 28k.

 

A pickup does work the same as a tractor! It's a power unit. It does what it's designed for.
