I am not asking what the shippers want to pay I'm asking the brokers what they think is a fair rate since they are the ones negotiating the rates with the shippers.

I pull a flat and a step and have wondered the same question when I call on loads. Where do these guys come up with these #s?? -
Depends where you are trying to go and time of year ....
Right now we do head hauls out of INKYTNOH to TX and brokers try to get you to do it real cheap like $2 or under a mile.
About $2.50 a mile to FL , and about $2.80 a mile to the northeast.
And the backhauls just get cheaper and cheaper your looking at about a $1 to $1.50 backhaul from TX and the Northeast back to INKYTNOH , as far as FL goes dont be surprised when you get offered under a $1 a mile backhaul, to the broker its "normal rate"
My only advice is shoot high rates always easy to come down.robbiehorn Thanks this. -
I am having lots of trouble as well. I Live in northern CA run team flatbed and all the loads are not more than a 1.50
whats going on?
I was getting more when I was leased to a BS trucking company hauling their dry van? -
It always hinges on how many trucks are in an area, and how many truckloads of freight are there as well. More trucks that freight (Florida) the rates are low... More freight than trucks (California produce season) then the rates are high.

Usually every year January/February brokers try to drop the rates extremely cheap, you might just have to take the time sit down and call several loads before finding a good one, maybe even go out of your route to somewhere else. Or if you really are having a hard time finding freight and have to take a cheaper load, at least get a load as light as possible, save on fuel!

You post a thread about let's make brokers pay and then you want help from brokers. Wow. Yeah brokers don't set the rates. The market does. So depending on lane, equipment, etc the rate PM will vary tremendously. I think most brokers I have worked with and this includes myself usually gets between 8-15% of the total line haul plus fuel. My parents were truckers and though my main goal is to feed my family and make my customers happy, I also try to be fair to the drivers. If there is detention I make sure they get it, I don't try to be cheap, but sometimes the lane or my customer dictates that I have to be. The reason why there is a need for us is that we have access to thousands of tucks on any given day. You can approach a customer to move loads for them, but you will only be available at certain times and many truckers don't like making sales calls. Trust me sales aren't fun or easy. I really try to avoid working with people that have your viewpoints and I think typically they don't last long with that attitude or strategy. Good luck.
