I use Eclipse on my laptop and transfer it to paper BECAUSE my carrier likes and wants paper logs. My solution is completely legal (and we have printers on board), however the FEDS want to move everyone to a system that is tied to the truck, I haven't researched a ton, but the JJ Keller solution looks like maybe the cheapest and is multi-platform, if you are going all electronic from the top of the fleet down I would look at skipping the intermediate step where I am and go straight to a full electronic logging system that is integrated to the truck electronics, my $0.02. By all indications we are all going to be there soon, my guess in the year 2016 sometime, might as well get a head start, LOL!

phone apps are a new concept dot isn't familiar with yet. and are probably better served with a tablet. bigger screen to see.
in order to print, though. you need a printer shareing app. and a wireless printer connected to your phone via mobile hotspot. although, others are using different methods.
i use trucklogger on my laptop. 60 day free trail. $60 to buy license after free trail. unlimited downloads. i've never had to repay after 4 years.
it does accounting also. but i don't use that part. everything that's entered is printed with the logs. so i just stick to the actual HOS.
it also has various formats for logs and DIVR'S. not just one format.
others like to use drivers daily log. some even use eclipse. more expensive, and i thought the programs were a little harder to use and the printouts looked a mess. but each their own opinion. both come with 30 day free trail.
google them. try them, and decide for yourself.slslogistics Thanks this. -
I was researching the JJ keller, I don't want the EOBR's to be fully integrated in the trucks. No plastic Domes here. I'm doing test right now using an elog at home, i'm purposefully letting it run all kinds of crazy hours to see how it will handle resets and Violations. It has the ability to fax and Email.

i started using the keeptruckin app last month and i really like it. better then any of the other app log books out there. no problem with dot. and they have a feature that lets you fax the logs for free if the officer wants paper. got my whole fleet on it. my safety officer loves it. makes his job easier. and mine too. my 2 cents

The DOT may never question elogs at the drivers end, but don't kid yourself. They will audit the main office and randomly pick a drivers log to scrutinize. They can even do an audit on weight so even though you run heavy and don't get caught at a scale, DOT could still pull you for a weight violation via an audit at the company office.
