im driving a 2013 Prostar with apu and a 1500 watt inverter.
I had a $39 midland installed and didn't hear any interfearance
my father gave me his Magnum S3 that he ran in his truck before he retired.
when the engine is running or the key is on there is a constant squeal that I cant squelch out
the only time I hear any other interference when the key is off is when my refrigerator kicks on

im going to try to pickup a noise suppressor to put in the power cord of the radio

anyone have any other ideas how to fix this problem?

Is the squealing happening when you key up? If so check all your coax connections to start. Secondly what kind of mic are you running with it? Cause your mic gain could be up to high.

So you hear this in your receive? Thats a ground problem. do this....ground and power to the battery, new coax and antenna( no factory stuff ) make sure your antenna studs are clean and well grounded and dont wast your time with a filter,it wont work. The Magnums are very senctive and pick up every little bit of noise. thats why i wouldnt have one!

like anything if it is a ground issue make sure it is grounded to bare metal, I took some sand paper to the metal on the fuse panel then bolted my ground wire to that for my General HP40W. After that I would follow the suggestion of going with non stock coax. Changing antennas and coax solved a lot of problems for me. I hope you get it solved I was checking them out online looks like one heck of a radio.

Edit: I was just thinking that I had read a few posts here of other drivers that were having problems with grounding their systems and it seems to me that more than a few of them were driving Prostars. I dont know if that will help you any.

Well when it works for one radio and not the other, it most likely isn't anything but the radio itself.

Grounding the radio/antenna is one solution for transmit issues like a high SWR and some receive issues. if you have a whine (not a squeal) when the engine is on, it can be a ground issue with the alternator, fuel pump or injection system - most likely the alternator's ground is gone. What the difference between a whine and a squeal is a whine has a specific pitch that is created by an energy source and in the case of some injection systems/alternators will change pitch when the engine's rpm is increased and you would hear things in the background. A squeal is where you wouldn't hear anything but the squeal and it would be a fixed pitch.

The one thing that sticks out in my mind is that the Midland may be a better radio.

Does the squeal increase and decrease with engine rpms? if so it's alternator whine. Good grounds will help eliminate it, and a filter box installed on the DC power cord also helps.

I agree with the grounding issue. There is no comparison between your Midland and the Magnum!
The Midland is a Ford Pinto and the Magnum is a Boss Mustang!
Ground to the battery directly, which eliminates rubber mounts and plastic left between body parts during assembly.
At the very least go to the frame, but battery is better, and will eliminate a lot of the static and alternator noises!
