This issue is related to a 99 Kenworth W900L - Detroit Diesel.

Forgive me if I use improper terms here. I have searched the forum before posting and am not seeing anything related to this specific problem. Here are the symptoms:

    1. Air is leaking pretty good. clearly audible.
    2. air spits off about every 2 minutes until truck has been running awhile then will spit off about every 5-7 min.
    3. occasionally, from the passenger side, you can hear a constant sputter sound that will subside if you dump a little bit of air out.

Someone mentioned air dryer at one point. Also, have had problems with the air governor freezing up in the frigid temps a few times over the last couple of winters. He would take it off and bring in to the heat, thaw out and everything would be fine. Not sure if this new problem has any relevance to that. Any thoughts?

Thanks so much in advance for any help.

Start with replacing the air governor... Part is under 20.00.... Less than an hour to change..... Fairly simple if you have the tools

If you do not know how long it has been since it has last been done, you should probably replace the dessicant cartridge on the dryer. The spitter valves also go bad too, and can be rebuilt.

Mistake.. it was the dump valve that was freezing up. not the governor.

For what it's worth, it turned out to be the air dryer. The one that was on the truck was the original on the '99 KW and has never been replaced! The guy at western star said that he recommends changing them out every two years! Whoops.

In a side note, some of the air dryers from Bendix have had issues. I changed over to a Haldex and never had a single issue after that.
Also, the Haldex are whisper quiet when purging air....they actually have a small muffler like device so it quiets down that blast of air noise.

Haldex was cheaper (new vs new) than the Bendix...but most guys buy refurbs.
