Eating/snacking healthy on the road

    First, I don't have a fridge, or a cooler. I don't need the extra clutter, nor the extra electrical loads when the truck is off or wasting money on ice. I also don't want to be doing dishes in the truck stop bathroom, or blending smoothies and worrying about cleaning up.

    I like to keep things simple. I also don't like to spend a lot of money trying to eat healthy, case in point, the fruit/veggie cups at Loves that are $2.99 a piece of 2 for $5.00 bucks. Here are a few items that I buy on the road.

    *Campbells soup in the cans
    *Dinty Moore Beef stew in cans
    *Hormel Instant meals
    *Bread
    *Rice cakes that come in different flavors
    *Canned vegetables
    *Beenie weenies, the small 10 OZ snack size cans
    *trail mix/nuts
    *Gold Fish snack crackers
    *Boost Nutrition bars for breakfast
    *Natures Valley Granola bars - for snacking and breakfast.


    Fruits and veggies that don't go bad without refrigeration:

    1. Carrots, I prefer to buy the long ones. At Wal Mart, the organic carrots are $2.00 for 2 lbs. They are prewashed, or at least I hope they are. I just grab one and eat while I drive.
    2. Grapes - I rinse the whole bag with a bottle of water, or if I remember bring the bag into the shower at the truck stop and rinse them
    3. Apples
    4. Bananas

    I eat two meals a day and snack in between. For Breakfast, I have a Boost bar, banana, and Nature Valley granola bars. I snack in between. For dinner, I either get fast food, Subway or eat out of the truck. I use the 12 volt Road Pro oven, it takes about 30-45 minutes to heat up a can, or 20 minutes to heat up a Hormel instant meal in a plastic tray.

    I don't drink soda unless I buy a combo meal for fast food. When I say fast food, I don't mean Subway. I only buy a foot long at Subway.

    I also take a calcium supplement in the form of gummy bears. Citracal gummies can be found in the pharmacy section at Wal Mart. $10.00 for 60 gummies, you can take 1-2 a day.

    I hope this helps. Any suggestions you have or comments would be welcome. I'm always trying to eat healthy and not spend huge sums of money doing it. When I do go shopping, I have 4-5 cases of water on average on the truck. I do recycle the bottles by twisting them up to a small shape and throwing them in a large plastic bag, then drop them off in a recycle bin when I get home.

    Take osteobiflex if youre trucking...its for joint health and great for flatbedders AND steeringwheel holders!

    You should consider avoiding the high fructose corn syrup concoction altogether (regular soda, and diet is just as bad).

    Also, do a little research on Magnesium. You'll discover that out of all the minerals out there, this is the hardest for any diet to get in sufficient quantity. Low Mg has been linked to heart problems/attacks.

    Not bad advice, although I'm inclined to say that if one truly wants to eat healthy, a refrigerator is really needed. A lot of food you mentioned are high in sodium. A frig will allow you to store fresh foods, along with yogurt which is extremely healthy for the diet.

    Oh, and you might want to add fiber bars to your list.

    when I was OTR, I would stay away from buying from overpriced truck stops. but a few good snacks

    Beef jerky
    already mixed canned protien drinks
    protien bars
    granola bars
    dried fruit/ fruit leather....(not the ones that are like gummy bears..thats just candy in disguise)
    pre packed lunchables
    super markets have pre packaged, diffrant kinds of salads w/ dressing in bag

    be carefull if you have high b.p. issues with those canned soups....they are really high in soduim

    you seem to be just cheap, LOL I GOT A FRIDGE, MICROWAVE, BURTON OVEN, small gas grill and apu. I eat well , healthy. I just aint cheap.


    all that effort and you still eat fast food. kind of negates the rest. with my burton I do smoked sausage, onions, sweet peppers, with a cubed potatoe, or a can of chicken breast meat and whole grain rice, and on and on. during the season I will stop and get fresh produce at roadside stands whenever possible, and snack only on fresh fruit and no sodas at all.

    Yes, the canned foods/premade meals can be high in sodium. But, you're not eating them three times a day and you get the recommended daily amount of sodium. I only drink water, and occasionally I buy Cranberry juice or Pineapple juice in the cans or mini bottles at the store.

    I sorta cringe when I see a driver with those monster 64 OZ refill cups at Loves or Pilot filling them up with soda. You can do what you want, but all that corn syrup and sugar is opening you up to diabetes, kidney stones and obesity.

    I try to eat healthy, but lets face it, its not easy. So, "A" for effort. More importantly, if you want to TRY to eat healthier, anyone can do this. It's easy, go to Wal Mart and buy the stuff.

    I'd really like to have milk and yogurt, so a fridge would be very ideal. I just can't justify one. PS, yes I am cheap.

    Ive been a weight lifter my whole life, I know you dont want o...but a cooler o frig while really open up your posibilities and options....could be mesy....bu i'd bring dried nonfat milk and add extra power so i wasent so watery and a lil extra protien

    you know, not to ge to much into my pesonal ####, my mom just had a heart attack last night, albiet miner..the cardioliist showed us before and after pics of the very small artery that was clogged...thank god, it was a small aertery, in fact he said he could not insert the balloon, and only inserted a wire to open it up..runs in my family, lost 1 uncle to cancer. 2 have had stokes, one didnt make it.........what I',m getting at is.....it was a real wake up call for me o get back on track...its one thing not knowing. but another knowing what o do and not applying it

    I'm big on fresh produce. When I didn't have a cooler I'd buy:

    - Sugar snap peas
    - Cherry tomatoes
    - Red bell peppers
    - Baby carrots
    - Bananas
    - Apples

    Eat the tomatoes and bell peppers asap, within a day or two. Baby carrots within three days. Bananas and apples can keep a few extra days.

    After getting a small cooler it opened up the possibility of getting leafy greens, blueberries, yogurt, etc.

    I don't cook in the truck. All my meals are salads. Protein sources that are my "go to":

    - Hard boiled eggs (many truck stops sell them for about $0.50 each, packed in 2's or 5's)
    - Canned meats (mackerel, salmon, or chicken)
    - Nuts
    - Yogurt (plain, never go for the sugar loaded fruit flavors)
    - Hummus

    From the time I break out the salad bowl until I'm wiping it down and finished with dinner is no more than 20-30 minutes. I lost about 15 lbs my first year trucking and I'm back to my college weight.
