Well, we took delivery of a "new" 1986 359 Pete that I mentioned in that "putting driver in old truck thread". I know it's only an '86 but she is still quite the time capsule just the same. There's stuff on it that I forgot existed. Air operated power windows. A throttle. Those retro defrost vents. Single round headlights that look like they came off a steam locomotive. Anyway, here are the first two questions.

    1. The hood opens and closes with air. There is a switch in the cab that sends air to a couple of 3 foot long rams that I guess is suppose to open and close the hood. One of these rams leaks air real bad so I called my local KW dealer (it's still Paccar right?). He told me that this was not a factory option. Is that true?

    2. I can't find and engine plate anywhere. There is a "C346" cast into each of the two rocker covers. Doe sthis mean it's a 3406C because the seller told me it was a B.

Bought new ones in '86 but can't remember if air assist was ordered or dealer installed.

C would not have a throttle rod.

My 86 had a all steel hood and it had factory air opening on it . A 86 is not a c model cat it is a B model unless someone switched it .

KW is wrong! Either rebuild the cylinders you have or give Ptb. the last 6 of the VIN and get a new one. My 86 359 had the same set up. The trucks probably older than KW's parts guy is.

Pull the s/n off the motor and call Cat. They can tell you what year and make the motor is.
Then check with Pete and see if that motor came with that trk.
As for the air assit hood, yes that was a factory extra. Like others have said call Pete not Kw.
Kinda like calling the Caddy dealer looking for parts for a Vega. lol

Yeah so true. He is a new parts guy at our local KW dealer.

HIM: "KW parts, this is Mark".
ME: "Hey Mark I have a 1986 Peterbilt 359. It's a Paccar, can you get parts for it?"
    HIM: 1986 359 Peterbilt?.........(long pause) Jeezus.

Well that picture didn't show up but since I have seen it in person I may be the only one here that knows of that particular accident.

But to the OP, yes that air assist hood was a factory option (requirement unless you are 6'6" and 380#).
