oil consumption on newer cummins isx

I have a 2010 ISX and am experiencing oil consumption too. Its not the brand of oil or the way you drive. Cummins knows there are problems and have a piston design change that is suppose to fix this. You will have to find a Cummins dealer rather than a truck dealer. On the west coast we have Cummins West in several places. Im just under the amount of oil used which is a quart in 500 miles and you are well over. They are offering to fix mine even truck though im out of warranty. Valve stem seals are also popping off on mine. Get to a Cummins dealership and start the process.

 

Not sure if your question was answered but Cummins is aware of the oil consumption issue. A few months ago they made a new piston design change to address this problem. I have a 2010 15 liter and Cummins is going to fix mine even though its well out of warrenty. Check with a Cummins West to find out the process. Sacramento, Redding, San Leandro, Bakersfield. Not sure of the LA area. Righetti Enterprise in Stockton knows too.

 

I also have a 2011 T660 with Cummings isx and am using a gallon to a gallon and a half every 3000 miles I took it to cummings and they just printed out a form wanting me to track the oil consumption. I have been having alot of problems with the truck getting codes DPF fuel pressure voltage and DPF Fuel enable actuator. I dropped truck off at cummings in lethbridge AB, Canada. I am from Sacramento, CA. The truck is a Stevens Transport Fleet truck any info you guys can provide will be really appreciated . Like if the Canada Cummings will honor warranty and other issues since I am from the USA

 

Cummins warranty is North America wide, no problem there. Engines that are over full on oil will burn oil quicker too, make sure it isn't simply over full.

 

Heavy this is what i was told too. My ISX435 '09 with Shell Rotella is consuming oil too but from change to change never goes under the low on the stick. So from the shop they told me to keep my eyes on the oil level and add oil only if it goes under that low mark on the stick. Is that ok to keep it this way?

 

Yep, you'll be fine. Not every dip stick is 100% actuate. Most dip sticks have a full range, not a full mark. So it is perfectly fine to vary the amount of oil.

 

I have first hand experience with this. I added oil to the full mark and in less than 2 days it was at the add mark. I added oil and the process repeated. I did this for one week. At the end of the week I left the oil at the add mark and it did not consume any more oil. Turns out it had the wrong dipstick in it. The engine was overfull by 2 gallons when at the full mark.

 

I've got International with Cummins ISX and it takes 3+ gallons if im driving 70+mph for 15000m cycle. When im driving 63-65 I've got 6.5mpg and oil consumption reduced to 2 gallons per 15000m. Engine had 500k miles when I got this truck, dealer said he change DPF filter. My first parkd regen was made after 30k. Is this normal? I'll try to see how the level will change if I will not add any oil for some time, maybe its just bad oil stick and on full level its over filled.

 

If find you are doing a regen almost every day, something is wrong.

 

I am running a 2013 Pete 386 with an ISX 15 in it and it started using oil. Did the required consumption test and used 8 gallons of oil in less then 20,000 miles. Peterbilt in Fargo tore it down, all 6 cylinders had 4 corner scores. Only had 160,000 miles on it. The company uses the same oil for the whole fleet, (over 150 trucks) and only the ISX motors have problems. This is my third truck with the company and I never had issues with oil consumption or excellerated engine wear on the other trucks. Cummins tried to blame it on the oil and or driver/operator error. The boss just told Peterbilt that if they do not take care of it then Kenworth will. Meaning the truck will be traded for a KW and there will no longer be any Peterbilts in the fleet. They jumped right on it because he buys a bunch of new trucks every year.
