What Rate is considered Cheap Freight?

    I haul equipment that weighs what most everyone on here's legal gross weight is, I did not mean that regular freight should or does pay rates like that, those are just numbers I threw out there for the sake of the conversation.

    Break it down to your cost per mile to operate. 1.37 per mile all my expenses and paying myself
    fuel truck payment Ect. 1.37 would be my break even point. It's more extensive than this but someday I'll break it down. So if you get a load paying 1.87 per mile that extra .50 cents is icing on the cake. Pure profit on top of my .40 cents per mile I pay myself already figured in the 1.37 break even point.

    One full and one partial and you're well above $3.50 a mile. Flatbed rates are now ranging from $2.60 to over $3.00 a mile for a no tarp legal load weighing less than 40,000#.

    Last year my company keep $.78 on 60,000 miles after driver pay and all expenses.

    Yes, There are 'Some' Loads paying North of $3.00 per mile....But Your not Going to get that regularly from a Cheesy Broker infested Loadboard....Your Just Not.

    Those People will Scratch and Claw to Profit No Matter how short trucks are.. Their pockets Matter FIRST, then The Carrier/Customer.

    I will say Flats are averaging $2.00 per mile right now via the Broker loadboards..............


    And, What Makes matters worse? You have these Mega Carrier/brokers like Mercer/Bennett/Kaplan/ etc...That are even WORSE than a 100% Freight broker only..Why?

    They Think they can pay an outside carrier "What they think" the Truck deserves...Yes, They have that kind of mentality and ethic. So.......Even when trucks are tight, These Carrier/Brokers still pay an outside carrier what that lanbe typically pays to a frickin 'leased on' truck.

    Than all are short haul under 300 miles your not fooling me 90% of my inbound freight is from brokers I use the same load boards you do and it's hard getting them to pay $2/mi. Just last week bear transportation had me pissed off I was in Mountaintop,PA DAT was showing 36 loads going to Houston fist load I called on was LS $1.85/ mi next load was 140miles away it paid $1.80/all miles, soon as got off the phone bear called had a load of cable reels needed 6ft tarpes was 47,800lbs offered me this load at $1.41/mi $2,200 I said sorry I can't come close to that she said well what could you do it for I said $3,400 she told me there's no need to pay that much why you have to have so much.........I lost it!!!!

    I ended up taking a load of mats to Youngstown and started loading LTL back down ended up making $6,100 on the turn back home. Load board freight is cheap.....even when I was in cleveland,oh three weeks ago everything going back down was $2/mi I was shooting for $2.50/mi ended up doing $2.41/mi going 100mi south of Houston.

    I make 20-50 calls looking for a load even when it sounds like a fare I always I always get back with them making them sweet some. I'd beat my all miles for brokered freight is around $1.90/mi seem to always have deadhead miles most my turns end up $2.65 or so in and out most my outbound runs $3.50/mi see how broker freight kills your all miles.

    All my loads are from Brokers and In the past three weeks I have not hauled a load that payed anything less than $2.60 a mile. Brokers are even calling looking for trucks with light, no tarp loads paying as much as $3.50 a mile. Brokers are starving for trucks right now and they're willing to pay top dollar for quality service.
