Is anyone having a problem with the TND 720 not connecting to a PC correctly?

I bought a new one at MATS and am trying to update it. When I connect it to my PC, the unit itself shows it's connected, but in Windows it keeps connecting and disconnecting constantly, popping up windows asking me to "Scan and Fix This Drive". I can't even get the Dock software to install because of this.

This is the second TND 720 unit that I've had this issue with. The first one is sitting right next to me on my desk, completely dead after I chose to "Scan and Fix" last time and it refused to start up completely. Mark here on this thread worked with me on this back last year, and even he wasn't able to get it to respond, and he tried for a LONG time, so I know it was beyond screwed.

Why are these units having this issue?? I know it's not my PC because this is a completely different computer and operating system than the one I was using when my original unit died (Windows 8.1 on this PC). It's like it's impossible to update the units without going through a massive hassle. I can't install the dock software without a unit connected, and I can't connect the unit for more than 2 or 3 seconds because Windows insists that I need to scan and fix it.

Has anyone else had this issue and been able to solve it?

I had that problem recently- for me, turned out to be a bad USB cable. Make sure your USB drivers are updated and try another USB cable. That there is the limit of my knowledge- sure Mark can help you further.

As mentioned... just close the scan.

Drivers are pre-installed on the computer already as part of the system for the USB ports.

You might try this. Turn off the computer, leave the TND on and connected. Make sure you are using the USB from the box.

Then turn on the computer. This will set the USB port to see the power requirements for that port. Once the computer is on, go to your start up button and click on computer and see if you see the TND as an external drive.

Newer computers tend to Micro-Manage the USB ports for power requirements and do a load balancing of power across all the ports.

If you can see the TND as an external drive then try to use the same port each time.

Sometimes I have had to go into the registry and clear out drive assignments to the USB ports, then reboot the computer. Then when you connect an external device the port will be reassigned a new drive letter.

One other trick might be use a short USB cable, like for an external hard drive. I have seen this a few times.

    Thanks,
    Mark

    Mark, regarding the USB cable....

There is in the truckstops, a "universal" USB cable being sold. I don't recommend that this thing be used- has replaceable ends that aren't real tight. If you guys need a new usb cable, better luck with one that is not "universal" and is purpose built.

Don't quote me on this, most car Built in systems are NAV systems with GPS, it's tided to the steering wheel Engel and speed sensor of the vehicle, they can look at 5 to 7 satellites at one time.
