I can understand why U-turns are frowned upon, but a fireable offense?

I feel for you guys who work for these mega carriers. It's no fun being treated like you don't' have a brain in your head. I'm certainly not looking forward to my first year working for this type of company.

This is why we hate mega carriers. U- turns are a fireable offense; give me a freaking break.
Nothing hit, nobody hurt and got out of a bad situation. Isn't that what they pay him for!

Yes, the OP would most likely have been fired. Since he quit there probably won't be anything derogatory on his record.

To all those who are saying the OP made the right decision to just pull the u-turn: what's wrong with just stopping? Pull to the side (which you'd need to do anyway to make the u-turn), put the four ways on and take a minute to think. Grab the atlas, the GPS, Google maps, etc and see what your options are. There may have been a safer option. Then again there may not have been.

Schneider policy is that if you need to make a u turn then you need to call the police to block traffic and/or Operations before making the turn. Is this blanket policy completely asinine in some situations? Yes, but in the majority of cases it is apt. We all remember the video of swift trying to pull the uturn a few months ago where he damaged the truck, trailer, and the surrounding landscape.

To the "dirty rotten snitch" point - at what point does snitching turn into being a responsible citizen? We all lament the dumb things we see drivers do. If no one says something then nothing will change. If I see one of our drivers acting unsafe I'm going to call the out - perfectlyably in person. If I can't talk to them.in person (or their response is highly inappropriate) I will call in.

If one unsafe act goes unchallenged what comes next? How long before the unsafe acts result in an accident? A fatality?

    gentleroger.......Please dont nit-pick this ok?

The ONLY thing I can agree with you on is the Stop and think of options. Before the U-turn is made

Their was most likely NO other option.....Im Not sure if you are a Driver..or some safety advocate not understanding the physical attributes of being on the street,But,

Until You are in that Scenario......Its hard to Predict what the best option was..

I Stand Firm on what I said earlier..This Young man Did not deserve to be terminated for this..Totally Uncalled for.

I know you Safety-minded 27 year old College Kids in Safety are Told How to Handle Drivers........

Why dont you guys try 'Common Sense' First? Instead of just 'Firing' a person without any heart....Just to Succumb to your self-reliant insurance Holdings.

i know,I know..........."We dont Care"or "Well,Thats just tough", is the general Motto of Corporate mindsets
