I just bought a truck in Minnesota, the dealer put Temp tags on it that were valid for 31 days.
Find out if the dealership does that, then call each state your going to be going through, and make SURE they honor the temp tag from the state you just bought the truck. Then find insurance, and enjoy driving home.

    nofilter and TruckerDragon Thank this.

The only state I am aware of that does not honor temp tags is Mass. I dont know how legite it is for them not to do so but you wouldnt have to worry about them anyways if you did drive it home.

Yes, but that isn't needed to drive it home from the dealer.

The way I did it when I bought trucks in MN and I live in FL.
1 I flew in and bought truck and trailer.
2 dealer gave me temp tags. These tags are only valid for unladen movement.
3 I called my insurance company and added trucks. If you don't have insurance, companies like OOIDA offer temporary liability insurance to move your truck.
    4 drive home.
I did not have a problem at all. The second truck I did differently as I got a TOP and trailer tags and hauled a load out of MN.

Costing me 1650 to deliver it to my front door from Denver CO to northern kentucky. By the time you break down the cost of expense going to get it an temp insurance fuel to drive it back it comes out the same an I don't have to deal with all the hassle.

Better have insurance on it before you move it. You won't be legal if stopped and don't have it. Cops love temp tags.

Awsome, thanks a lot guys. I think I will have it delivered. Now another question: I plan to take a couple weeks to myself before leasing on again, but dont want to get TOO rusty with things. Once it is delivered, go get plates, and get what? Just bobtail insurance and I will be ok to drive around town bobtail and keep myself in shape?

You can only buy bobtail if your leased to someone. To drive around town, you'll need the same type of insurance that you would to drive the truck from the dealer. Typically it's a couple hundred a month and is a temporary product. You can't buy plates without insurance. OOIDA will have everything you need

If I recall correctly you can't get a IRP/Plates without a lease agreement from a employer.

Yep a lease agreement and their insurance, or your own insurance. No insurance, no tag.
