Here in KY you can get a non commercial usage plate an you replace DOT number with a Not For Hire sticker. Not sure what something like that would cost but you are free to drive it just like a car as long as it's insured.

But it for just two weeks find someone to lease onto an if they cover the plates just tell the you can't start for two weeks an they will make you sign a lease, an possibly go ahead an give you a plate insurance an ifta. The as long as you are bobtail you can drive the truck freely as long as your name is on the title.

    Ok-what about this:

You buy the truck not from a dealer but the owner-just some guy. As long as you have insurance can you just apply for a temp plate? I've done this with cars but always in my home state. And here's my dilema-I'm presently moving to Texas from New Mexico but would only drive the truck to my shop in NM for maintenance before I lease on to a company. So which state do I get the temp tag from? Also-TX DPS which issues the tag stipulates the temp tag vehicle has a current inspection sticker. Thoughts?

This is what I did. Rented a car, check out the truck, called my insurance company, got an insurance card faxed, and my company sent me a temp tag.
