Guys how did you get your Plates/Tags in New York, even the local DMV couldn't give me a straight option. I read the cost can range from $1000-$3000 but when I called the DMV they told me it will be $365 A year, I thought it was a one time fee didn't know it was a yearly fee. Perhaps I am not clear to the DMV what I need to get I told them a plate for a Tractor and Trailer they asked me the weight I believe the freightliners weigh about 17,000LBS + the trailer so I am guessing about 30,000lbs.

How did you guys get it if you are from New York, how much did you pay?

I'm pretty sure you want to register for max GCVWR, or atleast your max GCVW that you would expect to haul. ie 80,000lbs. My personal truck is too heavy to register in NY as a passenger vehicle, and is registered commercial it weighs in at 8800lbs empty. Its registered for 19k I pay 193 every 2 years.

I assume its different but similar for TT

The reason I register it for 19 is because if I have the plow on, or am towing heavy and get pulled into a scale, (ANYWHERE) I'm screwed. The lady at the DMV used to talk me into passenger plates on my old truck which weighed in at 7900lbs but that was playing with fire, adding my plow put me over the 8500 max.

Not sure how NY does it, but in Ohio, the DMV isn't where you go for apportioned plates. The state should have an IRP office. That $365 fee is a big red flag. Apportioned plates are not cheap. Unless you plan on only driving intrastate.

Find out where your International Registration Plan (IRP) office is located, and contact them.

the IRP office is under the egg in Albany New York. you need to bring at least 2200 cash if you're just doing east of the Mississippi. DMV can only register you for intrastate New York. or agricultural or farm plates.

you also need to have your heavy vehicle tax receipt. 3 or so proofs of your business address as far as bills.

Do yourself a favor and register the trailer in Maine for a fraction of the cost. 100 percent legal.
