I can appreciate what was probably the original intention to report 'good' and 'bad' companies, I'm sure there are some rough outfits out there, just like some CDL schools that are basically meat factories, or 'mills.' Here's my issue, there's far too much complaining by folks that are probably never going to be happy, or are always going to wind up the 'victim.' I don't need to be a seasoned driver to see the issue here, it can be seen in other industries as well.
I have a hard time believing that certain companies are out to screw drivers over. I see a problem with a driver complaining about a certain company when other drivers are successful at the same company. It doesn't take a genius to figure out what's going on - it's a bad attitude, bad outlook, poor work ethic, and a victim mentality that is the issue.
Granted, there will be certain individuals in certain companies that do not play well with others. Some people seem to have a bad day, every day of the year. I've heard horror stories about certain dispatchers. But in general, respect is earned, and from what some successful, veteran drivers have told me, miles and good paychecks come with a respectful attitude and great work ethic.
I just joined this forum, but I see a lot of bad attitudes and complainers. I don't expect this post to change anything. People gripe and complain, that's the reality of it. I'm just hoping that I get to rub elbows with some positive people. I've already met some great people in this industry. I'm excited to become a part of it. I just felt I needed to comment on some of the ugliness I've also seen so far. The tragic thing is that when I first started researching trucking, all I was seeing on the internet was griping, complaining, and slandering of companies. I know there have to be countless other prospective drivers that have gone through the same thing. It seemed like there were no good companies! You get to a point where you're thinking they're all crooks and scoundrels.
Unfortunately not everybody can see through the garbage and think for themselves. The negativity just recycles and so do the bad attitudes and slander. Thank God there are positive people that are out there to guide prospective drivers. There are successful drivers that don't fall into the trap of labeling good and bad companies. Again, I realize that some people in this industry are completely selfish and do not care about the welfare of others. But labeling whole, entire companies that have been around a while as good and bad? Garbage. There are no good and bad companies, only good and bad attitudes. I'm sure the bad attitudes are sticking their noses up right about now.

As a student you haven't had a chance to see the real world. The fact of the matter the trucking industry has the highest turn over rate of almost any job. Companies have two choices to fight this expensive problem. They either go out of their way to retain experienced drivers that make them money with minimal side effects or they choose the other route of hey they are going to quit anyways we might as well get the most out of them. These type companies go for the cheap labor. Wait until you are lied to on numerous occasions, you work almost 100 hours and get a $200 paycheck or you want to go home but are pointed the other direction... you will be right back here posting.
Sure there are posters that are horrible workers and everything is someone else's fault but there are many legitimate complaints too. Validity comes in numbers. Sure an experienced driver knows how to make the best out of a company but an experienced driver also knows how to be selective and what the industry offers. The industry is so broad in treatment drivers make from $25K to $100K plus just because how you play your cards. Newbies are green and most are taken advantage of. About 1 in 6 survive a year. That "1" is the one that moves on to greener pastures.
Then you have your dispatchers which are the same as any employee as far as good and bad. You can go to a great company and get a horrible dispatcher you don't click with. They can make or break you.
The ugly is out there, so is the decent living wage. These forums are a valuable tool when used correctly. Do your job, don't complain, be dependable and things will slowly get better. You will think different about the job a year from now. Two years from now you will see the industry in a different light then you did at 1 year. This progression will continue all the way to about 5 years you will finally be seasoned and have a full understanding of the industry. Don't think you have it figured out yet because you haven't even begun to figure it out. It's good to talk about it though. That's how you learn and that's one reason the forums are here.
