I'm planning to begin driving in the next couple of months. I've been doing a serious amount of research. In this day and age of technology with cell phones and the like is there really a need to have a CB radio? It seems kind of redundant to me but are there things you can do with it that cannot be done with a cell phone? Thanks!
Is a CB Radio really necessary to have?

Sometimes a cb is a very valuable tool to have. Get one, certain places need you to have one for communication for loading/unloading, finding out traffic/weather conditions, and sometimes you even have pretty good conversations with other drivers.

You don't have to own a CB, but it can be difficult with some shippers. There are some who use CB's to communicate with drivers to tell them where they need to load or unload. A CB is also a useful tool to have when there is bad weather or accidents. Some are equped with weather bands and that can help when there are adverse conditions. I once listened to my weather band during a tornado. One tornado was in front of me and another behind. It was good to have at the time. An inexpensive CB can be purchased for about $35-50. One with weather can be purchased for around $100 or so. You can get by without a CB, but life on the road can be a little easier when you do own a CB.

When you are sitting in a 10 mile backup that has the road closed and other drivers are giving advance notice a few miles before the backup starts the old CB comes in real handy. Also you may blow a trailer tire or lose your read lights other drives will let you know you have a problem or about to have a problem. You don't have to get all super trucker, heck my CB only goes out a couple miles but sure has come in handy.

Thanks for the replies. Good to know there is still a use for the CB.

I will say since going local I really miss my CB. Several times I have reached for it reflexively and it's not there. I don't have an assigned truck yet so I'm slipseating. I'm thinking of building a small wood box with a handle to mount my radio in and use a magnet mount antenna so I can take my radio from truck to truck.

A CB is one more tool a driver has. Like GPS, Maps, Cell Phones, Pen and Paper. You can get by without a CB but there are times they are really handy.

I agree, good to have for the obvious reasons, traffic alerts, broken down vehicle on the shoulder of a 2 lane road just up around the bend type stuff. Once in a while you find an interesting driver to #### chat with and compare notes etc. Better than sign language while running down the road.

Okay, another really basic question. Is there a particular channel that Most truck drivers use on a CB? How do you make sure you are communicating with the truckers that you are near?
