I am a newbie. Our company requires a cb. Its on the list of what to have when starting with them. Thats how we communicate in the yard. Right now Im driving with a trainer. I didnt even know his cb was on until someone asked us a question at a rest area. I havent really checked how he has it set but shippers also use it and like everyone is saying instant info. be it a tire, lites, a strap loose, or what ever. To me it is like a tool in my tool box, along with my atlas and gps and google maps and copilot and my bible..... not to mention you hear some funny $#!%. "How many bushels you got on that skateboard?" So far I love truckin!!

I sold my Cobra 29 LTD Classic to some tow truck driver when I went local. Don't have any use for it anymore. Know every major road and detour in the city, mostly stay north of the congestion on the toll highway where it's 95% smooth sailing. Weigh stations are on opposite ends of Toronto and I stay between both of them. We're limited to 105km/h so we can't speed on major highways anyway. Besides, I found a lot of drivers never used it much in the city. Unless it was two or three guys running together on a different channel, in which case I'd play Eastbound and Down over the mic as loud as possible, because I know everyone loves that song.

Too many replies to think this will get read, but . . .

CB is important. Much less important and much more expensive that a good Map Book. More important and less expensive than the new Coleman 40 qt.

    Still, both are important investments.

You'll figure out why after you make the investment, learn (everything is learning) how to get a return for the investment, and figure out at what level you will invest for what you wind up doing.

As far as a CB? We used to say; "Got your ears on?" They were our ears to eyes that just saw whatever was in front of us we were gonna see and some local info. Road conditions, problems, route, "mash it and go good." Whatever. Lot of trash talk but to be frank; that can be quite amusing (listening to two guys argue on the CB).

It's how we attempted to communicate with strangers doing the same thing we are that we wanted something from; be it information or just company on a long ride.

How that fits in your particular priority list is entirely a personal decision. I have been at this long enough to have all the gizmos. One thing I have NEVER had happen bookin' it down a back road . . .

Get a text message, e-mail, Facebook IM, tweet, yada, yada, Smartphone, tablet, laptop or GPS alert . . .

"Gotta County Mountie shootin' ya in the face about two miles before the bridge. Some shoulder mowin' before ya get to Burke. Got them bush hogs stickin' a little into the road kickin' up a hell of a dirt cloud. Other than that; clean and green to Shakytown and the Big Road (CB slang for the next big town or city and the Interstate)."

"'Preciate it. Look good back my way back to [place]. Ain't seen a thing 'cept for City Kitties in the towns tryin' to score some greenbacks on the way in. You know the drill."

"Roger 10. Have a good 'un."

"Back at ya and keep it tween the ditches."

    "You know it. You too."

Won't hear much of that on the interstate these days but get off on the back roads and start the conversation with information and it is still VERY prevalent.

How important that is to you . . . well; that is ENTIRELY up to you and what you do.

There are times when I wish some of the infants using the CB would got to channel 41 and leave the rest of us alone.
Hey X-Country, I know you'll like this, ,,A woman has the last word in any argument. Anything a man says after that, is the beginning of a new argument:biggrin_25515:
more like anything a man says afterwards aint worth the wasted time of day spent reading it.

um i never said you or anyone else was wrong for using a cb.

i just stated my position on why i think its obsolote. if you dont like my opinion on the matter fine. i can live with that.

and you dont know my background or my history thank you very much, so you arent qualified to tell me what i do or do not know. ive been in various levels of transportation my entire working life.

i run without one and i do just fine. im a big girl. i can take care of myself and my truck without a cb and without ending up in a ditch, on a dead end road, or on youtube.

    have a nice day.

Channel 19 is the trucker channel. If you can hear them, they are probably truckers. Not a lot of 4 wheelers use them anymore. I agree with everyone else though, CB is a good thing to have, especially loading or unloading at walmart dc's or about any food warehouse. Can keep you out of an accident as well.

Wonder if that cellphone is going to tell her when theres an accident in progress right in front of her? Of course, I do understand a woman not wanting to have a cb. Drivers do get pretty raunchy on them sometimes, especially towards a woman.

Lol, I see your point, but yes...I did intend it to read the way it does. I don't know where it started, but my mom use to say things "out of order" like that when attempting to make a point. It doesn't read as well as it sounds. Try saying it out loud with the pause after "not". It sounds better out loud lol :)
