I don't know what the circumstances of the accident, but my 13yr old grandson was just in one on his bike the other day, no helmet. He busted his glasses up, road rash on his face, arm and leg. Bruised ribs, landed I guess and thumped the pavement with the back of his head, which his mom just found out from a neighbor that he had been knocked out totally. He was lucky. His cousin a couple of years ago was going down a hill and ended up with 2 front teeth knocked out, split chin, etc. I don't know how we managed to raise our son with all the stunts he pulled on a bike because helmets were not even dreamed of then for bikers to wear.
Anyone on a motorcycle without a helmet is just asking for trouble. -
Discipline often requires some sort of sacrifice on the part of those administering it, and apathy breeds apathy. -
Title 49, Section 392.16 of the Code of Federal Regulations states:
"A commercial motor vehicle that has a seat belt assembly installed at the driver's seat shall not be driven unless the driver has properly restrained himself/herself with the seat belt assembly."

I also was off on the year. it was in July 1970.
§ 392.16 Use of seat belts. A commercial motor vehicle which has a seat belt assembly installed at the driver's seat shall not be driven unless the driver has properly restrained himself/herself with the seat belt assembly.

Here's one big reason why you wear a seatbelt: Scenario: 4 lane rd, you're in left lane, you come into intersection and get t-boned on right side which causes you to go into incoming traffic, how do you control the vehicle when you're schmooshed up against right door and not behind steering wheel? Now youre heading towards a family and kill 3 kids you MAY hav been able to avoid because you thought it was govt telling you what to do and not for your own protection.
Similar to reason for passengers to wear them, if we get hit on left side how do I control car with my wife or friend jammed in my lap?
You can't claim you believe in safety and not use them, and nobody cares about you, by not wearing it you endanger me! -
I am not " cherry picking " as you were saying . Lol
I guess the word that most appropriately fits would be " pessimism "
however I am a slight version of that .
not always looking at evil , but I do see the negative outcomes on a situation before I see positive.
Hope I spelled that right . Lol -
My father never used to wear his seatbelt, so my mother would give me a dollar ever time I caught him without. His forgetfulness more than paid for a NES/zelda combo, so I grew up always putting it on -- even sitting in a parked car I would put it on...
But a month working the oil field tempered me with the constant in/out of the cab. I still wear it everytime I drive, but I now automatically take it off once I reach a parking lot where I'll be stopping.
But whatever, it's your choice right?gpsman, NavigatorWife and SHO-TYME Thank this. -
I wear my seatbelt in my personal vehicle because :
1) that seatbelt "Dinger" worrys the crap outta me.
2) My wife worries me more than the dinger when I dont put it on.
I wear my seatbelt in my 18 wheeler because:
After one warning ticket & two... $250 seatbelt tickets all in Texas... (yes, you read that right... $250 for a seatbelt ticket in Texas,
and one $25 ticket.. (yes, $25) in Louisiana,
I figured out I could no longer afford the fines & couldnt beat the system. Now I wear a seat belt all the time.
After 60 years or so of seatbelts being put in vehicles, it looks like they could come up with something better than the same primitive system we have had for all these years. We can put a man on the moon & send a spacecraft to Mars, but we cant come up with a better system than being girted up like a plow mule.NavigatorWife Thanks this. -
