Roadmedic, you've been doing this as long as anyone on this forum, and i've read a lot of your posts. Is there money to be made running with your own authority in the RV transport business? I've read lots of posts where guys are barely making money with the companies they're leased to. What do you think of running with your own authority as opposed to leasing on?

I went and got my authority years ago and suddenly was getting letters from states for taxes I never went in. I tried to get in with the factories and since I was several miles away, it was not easy to do. My bids for the loads went unanswered. The insurance cost was high in 2006. -
I never see posts from the haul-n-tow and lowboy drivers. How are they doing in this business? I might consider going that route since i've got my CDL.
GearWarrant Thanks this. -

Haul and tow guy here at your service . $ 2.40 per mile outbound . Back haul offers anywhere from .30 to $1.00 per mile with most being right around .50 . Obviously , I DON'T take .30 backhauls !!!!!!!! .50 backhauls only work out if there is extremely little out of route miles . I average 60% for backhaul compared to deadheading back to yard . For the most part , backhauls are a royal pain in the you know what . I have been doing it for 1 1/2 years and enjoy it very much . Hope this helps .
ralphbohm, rowekmr, JChors and 1 other person Thank this. -
LOL Jeff, thanks for chiming in. What type of equipment are you running? When you say backhaul, are you referring to RVs or other freight?

I will pick up a boat on the 27th in Bozeman MT and move it to troy MI 1,680 miles.
1,680 X 1.75 = $2940.00 -20% ($588.00) = $2,352.00 - $500.00 fuel = $1852.00 this comes out to $1.10 per mile. Total dead head will be 450 miles to Bozeman and 190 from Troy to Middlebury. -
Is the company you're leased to keeping the 20%? (I've been wondering what their take is)
-
I think our company no longer allows it.
