    Proof?

There are too many lazy/clueless drivers out there. That's why you see so many blowouts and gators on the road. At the very least gauge your tires once a week. It only takes 30 minutes to do all 18 wheels, that is assuming you top off several tires. Me? I can't roll down the road not knowing for sure what my tire pressures are. I get paranoid one tire is low and can blow at any moment.

    You had to ask...

I can't find it at the moment, but I read an article on tire inflation, and they were talking with Michelin (iirc) engineers, who said that overinflating a tire results in premature wear and more likely damage from road hazards and debris.

If the tire is too hard, it doesn't flex properly, doesn't absorb the road imperfections properly (remember, they're part of the spring/damper design of the suspension), and is subject to more damage because they're so hard they can bounce off the things causing damage.

Underinflated tires will just flat overheat, and eventually destroy the tire via delamination (see Explorer rollover brouhaha).

Properly inflated tires will work as designed, and last longer than over-or under-inflated tires, they'll absorb the bumps and hazards without as much damage, and because they'll flex properly, the tread will wear more evenly, too.

I'll try to find the article, but it was very telling.

Get it replaced. Doesn't matter if the tire will last for another 50,000 miles.. Barney sees that, it'll have to be replaced anyhow.

I wouldn't ask an officer... not unless I was bored and wanted a Level 2 just to break the monotony.

Yeah get it replaced ASAP. That casing is not even good enough to recap, even in Mexico. BTW from your photo, that is not the sidewall. Hard to tell from here but it almost looks like a virgin tire and not a recap.

looks like most are telling the op to get the tire changed right away it is a trailer tire so matching the tread is not necessary like it is on the drives. Any used tire would work as long as it has good sidewall and tread. Then again if it is a company trailer so let them decide.
