I just obtained my CDL-A and was going to go to drive for US Xpress when I heard that once I work there, no other trucking company will hire me and I would need to take a refresher driving course. Has anyone else heard of this? This was told to my by the Werner recruiter a few days ago. I'm now really stumped. Anyone know if that is true?

    DUH! Recruiter talk.....

As long as you can still drive a standard, anyone will hire you. His speach was directed at the fact USX has auto's.

By any chance was this Werner recruiter trying to get you to drive one of his trucks?

And some folks wonder why Werner's reputation has sunk somewhat lower than the sewer ponds. . .:biggrin_25513:

Who told you that? If you want I can get you lead supervisor # for recruiting. If you have a pusle you'd be hired by most companies lol. But automatic trucks do sorta lose the point of training since most companies have manuals. You would probably have to retrain if you moved companies.:biggrin_25511:

    So what?
What's wrong with taking a refresher course if it's necessary? Are you planning on ditching US X? Or, are you planning to remain with them for a few years?

    Who knows?
Maybe US X will be a perfect fit for you and you'll be there for a long time.

If that Werner recruiter was vague as to WHY a refresher course MIGHT be necessary, and they're leading you to believe it's because of the company, rather than to insure you're capable of driving other equipment,......... I'd lose their phone number ASAP.

Wrong information and/or misleading information is worse than NO information. That Werner recruiter might consider it a "white lie" -- but it has the potential to cause you grief -- and that ain't right -- IMO.

    HaiL!
If you remain with US X for about five years, and the economy improves, I think you'll see MORE truckin' companies goin' with auto-shift Big trucks. In which case, YOU'D be ahead of the game by already knowing how to operate the newer equipment.
YOU might even be offered a NEW Big truck upon hire. How does a 'Driver Trainer' position sound to you? YOU might be offered THAT job as a result of knowin' whatcha know. :yes2557:
    Ya know? :biggrin_25519:

i called schneider a few days ago about their tank division and was told since i drive for USX(automatics), they wouldnt hire me. not sure if that was 'recruiter speak' or what. ive heard that if you have driven nothing but auto and go to a company that is manual shift, they will let you drive around in their yard, getting the hang of it, before you take the road test. i wouldnt worry about it.
