Yes . Cars for backhauls and obviously they don't pay squat . . Lowboys can load two or three depending on size and location . We can't haul regular freight cause company doesn't want to wait out the 90 day pay game . Wish that we could though cause it pays A LOT better . Like I said before , backhauls are a real pain in the behind . Believe it or not but sometimes it is more beneficial to just head back empty . Hassle of brokers not returning calls , sometimes you think that you are booked for a backhaul and broker gives it to someone else , making arrangements for pickup and delivery times with customers , businesses only open during the day Mon - Fri , excessive out of route miles etc etc . Trouble is , if you deadhead back empty all of the time in a class 7 or 8 truck , I don't think that you will last too long in business . I own a Kenworth T 300 haul and tow . It has a Cat engine with a 9 speed .

Also , we can find our own backhauls and book it ourselves through Central Dispatch . If we do this ( which I do ) , company takes 15 % as opposed to 20 % .

Jeffman, any pics of your rig? Does it have a sleeper?

JChors, GearWarrant, rowekmr and 1 other person Thank this.

Very nice, Jeffman. I'm considering something similar.

What do you think of this class 8 tractor as a candidate for a Haul'n Tow conversion?

Its whatever you make of it. Personally I beleive you dont need something that big unless comfort is #1 wuth you. I have a 2006 International 4400 automatic with a 24' bed and a 30 " sleeper.
The object is to make money. With your rig, you are going to be digging out of a hole for awhile.
If you have never done H/T before maybe sign on as a driver for someone who owns one. Or, buy a off lease Ryder and fab it yourself -
edit: Then again, I may just use that conversion money to buy a low boy trailer instead.Last edited: Jun 13, 2014
