I'm very pleased you're going to keep your posts short and sweet because I have a low IQ and short attention span.
I chased the high CPM and have now hit the glass ceiling at 66cpm. Can you offer me any advice on earning more? It's all drop and hook and I drive it as fast as I safely can.
I agree on the stupid questions and answers. This is a great thread to really get to the meat and spuddies of it all.
Go easy on those pain meds while you recover!
Happy trails !
down for the summer ...

Well I have a little experience in both fields you have worked in.But when it comes to trucking I have been doing it for 18 years ,and as difficult as it is I always did well with money, but it is a business where you can make money or you can work a lot and make no money. Experience teaches you how to pick jobs. I can read an ad ,and pick up the phone and ask a few questions and know if a job is a waste of time. I also never expect to stay anywhere long term. No place is considered a home for life. You are someplace today that has work and things are good, then 3 years later the accounts start running out so the company starts pushing drivers out the door,so you must always consider yourself freelance,in my opinion. This is not an industry where longevity is a virtue. Maybe years ago it was ,but not now . Keep your license clean and you always have work. As far as local work- I can only speak for the northeast. it is always been $45000-$58000 from my experience, depending on.........well a lot. I always hated OTR because I always felt that you were on the job 24 hours a day but only got paid by miles. If you break it down by the hour, you are well below minimum wage.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
Well maybe not minimum wage ,but I'm sure you get where I'm coming from, god bless the guys who do it though,we need them.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
guscast, BobcatVolvo and maffy95 Thank this.

this has not been the best time for anyone to get a good start in any business with the economy, dot up your butt... the works ... I never said it was going to be easy ...
do I have all the answers .......no
following the rules of the road and taking the time to keep you out of trouble is key ...
time management.. take a few minutes to double check... for everything
weight...tandem settings ... stuff you can fix ... why give dot your hard earned money ...
parking in the proper/legal places
have I made these mistakes...plenty of times ... ever got caught... yes ... never made the same mistake twice
keep making the mistakes that cost you money will get you out of this business real quick
I was an owner/operator for 3 years ... made a lot of money ... spent a lot of money ...
I will never do it again
every time I would walk into the O/O dept of my company there would be someone up there screaming they needed to get out of their lease because they've had a 0 paycheck for the last 3 weeks ... I blame the driver ... bottom line
IF YOU CAN'T MAKE MONEY AS A COMPANY DRIVER YOU SHOULD NOT SIGN FOR A TRUCK....END OF STORY -
blairandgretchen Thanks this.
-
I'll take "I know everything so listen to me" for $100 please, Alex.
Chinatown, maffy95 and blairandgretchen Thank this. -
Why would you not do it again?
What company were you training for? -
lvnvchuck - good luck with your recovery.
blairandgretchen Thanks this. -
people... listen
I started in this business not knowing anything... with a ton of bills and the only one making the money ... I put myself on a very short learning curve... meaning I wasn't making any real money until I walked into the corp. office of my trucking company and pulled my first 3 bosses off their butts into a conference room and told them point blank ... miles or I walk right now .... I can do this job let me do it .... it was amazing ... averaged 3000 miles a week until I signed for my own truck a year later .... that was simple huh...
I believe every company has that one special payroll person and their only job is to find a way to take your money ...
you need to break down your payroll every week ... if you don't have time make time ...
document every load ... detention time ... everything ... you can't miss nothing ...
my wife called me and told me they paid me twice on a load and she asked me what I was going to do ... I said nothing ... if they want to pay me twice let them ...
I do not want to fight with anyone on these post ... I want to help
bring me a specific question and I will give you a specific answer...
as for bringing experience from another job ... doesn't matter what it is... the fundamental question is ... do you have what it takes to get the job done... are you one of those who expect someone else to do it for you or are you wiling to get your hands dirty ... make mistakes...get past all the judging and wow ... look out ... you might accomplish something ..
I could easily sit here and tell you how much money I have made doing this job but that won't accomplish anything
I could tell you that I driven for 4 different trucking companies in my short time and smelled BS at the first 3 and took my experience and moved on ...
